I need some advice. I plan on uploading large video files in HD (720p) to Youtube regally. However my current upload speed probably wont do the trick.

My upload speed seems to be caped at 61Mbps but my ISP telecom said there is no cap it's just as fast as my phone line allows for. Is this true?

I am not much of a computer person so any help would be appreciated.

Extra info (dunno if it will help)
ISP -Telecom
Plan - Total home pro
Running on Ethernet.
Router - D-link DSL G604t

Happy to supply any info on request.

Any help would be much appreciated.

It is most likely true. You're download and upload speeds are both about half of what most people get on an ADSL2 connection. One thing to check would be to see if you're exchange does ADSL2, and if so, are you using an ADSL2 capable modem? It is possible that you are using an outdated modem on newer technology.

If you want the ultimate speeds, look into VDSL, if it is available for you. Some people are seeing over 20mb/s upload.

However, your upload definitely seems slow. I am having major issues with my broadband (getting fixed atm) and even I am still seeing higher upload speeds than you. I am getting 1mb down, about the same up.

This might be the case. I just check and it looks like my modem its only ADSL cable not ADSL2.
Thanks.

Your upload speed looks normal for your download speed. Do you know how close you are to an exchange/cabinet? Check the Chorus SAT to see what zone you are in. With that sort of upload you either have terrible wiring or are a good distant fromt he exchange/cabinet so VDSL won'tbe an option. ADSL can't give more than 1Mb/s upload unless you are on gear that allows for annex m and then you can have 3Mb/s. I don't think Chorus allow annex m but some of the provider with ULL gear will - but I don't really no for sure.
Wireless ISP's can offer symmetrical plans normally around 5Mb/s. Otherwise then only other option is a stupidly expensive HSNS circuit but you wouldn't get one of them for home because they crazy expensive.
Oh... then there is fibre of course lol.

Look at the stats on your modem.. Is the download rate something like 7616Kbps? Then yes, upgrade your modem and you should see a big jump. But if you are in a VDSL zone then why not get it?! Massively increased download and heaps more upload.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

VDSL is certainly quicker, if you want to change I would recommend contacting an ISP such as Snap and talking to them about moving. I am not familiar with the specific equipment used with VDSL, but if you are in zone and the line noise is low enough it shouldn't be a major I don't think.

How old is your modem, if you do go with VDSL you may have to purchase a new one, however it seems yours looks like it could you with an upgrade anyhow.

My modem is over 5 years old. Defiantly needs an upgrade.
I think ill upgrade to ADSL2 at the moment and maybe VDSL in the near future. A little expensive at the moment. Thanks guys.

Talk to CoffeeBaron if you are in Auckland. He will come and check your wiring and make it as fast as possible. Would definitely recommend VDSL2 for uploading large videos. It's quite expensive though $400 for the install, $300 for a modem just for starters lol!

Sadly i'm in Dunedin.
Could you tell me where you got those money numbers from?
From what I understand Snap are offering $50 monthly fee on top of normal plan price. Then a further $345 for the modem. They say this about a wiring fee.

**Normally you won't need to have anything wired unless you are getting a new line installed. However if any wiring is required, the above prices apply.

So from what i understand i wont need a wiring and connection fee?

Really? I just finally got the bill for my VDSL wiring job and it was under $200. Sounds like you're using the wrong ISP Tongue Out

I have heard though that it's best to first get DSL provisioned on a line and then get it changed to VDSL, cheaper that way.

I might upgrade my modem/router. I currently have this D-Link DSL G640 T, read another forum saying its a relic :( Does anyone know any good modem/routers that would work with my current ADSL2 but that i would be able to use for VDSL2 in the future? Preferably not to expensive

Ohh and i found this info dunno if it helps at all.

ADSL Firmware Version:      5.00.04.00 - 5.00.03.00 - 5.00.03.00 Annex A - 01.07.2b - 0.52ADSL
Software Version:               V3.00B01T01.TX.20060516
Line State                         Connected
Modulation                       ADSL_2plus
Annex Mode                    ANNEX_AMax \
Tx Power                         -38 dBm/Hz

SNR Margin                 1212dB
Line Attenuation          93dB
Data Rate                   14981731kbps

Once again you help is much appreciated as i'm not to tech savvy :)

Oh didn't realize that was possible? Yea its for a new install where apparently wiring is mandatory?
