I've got a flatmate that has probably contributed to using our BB data faster than normal. He does not pay for BB. So goin into my modem settings (NetComm wireless router), I first had to take note of the MAC address of my flatmates phone and laptop and his friends phone as well as my own under the >Wireless >Station Info settings and I would block their usage depending on the time of day using the >Advanced Set up >Parental Control >Time Restriction. He would video call and watch youtube at early ours of the morning. In addition I would block certain URL too using the >Advanced Setting >Parental Control >URL Filter setting.A point to note is that a full URL address is not required.  Even keywords instead of a URL will block SEVERAL sites instead of just the one.I would use keywords such as'download''torrent'It's just simple for me to delete the filter if I need to download a program, which is not very often at all.

I'm not sure what the point of this post is? Are you wanting advice in regards to blocking your flatmates usage?

Most "Cheap" routers don't have data limits (I believe some TP-Links support Gargoyle - www.gargoyle-router.com which enables this feature).

TBH though if it's such a problem either

1. Change to the Unlimited Plan or 2. Have a talk to him and tell him if he keeps using more than his share of data he will have to pay for it. 3. He's not paying, Change the password & make him pay for it

This would be counter-productive.  He would have nothing to do but use the internet!

Just make your flatmate pay for the overage data.

I think you missed the point of the comment. ;-)

I don't know of a single roommate that I would allow to get away with not paying for a utility.

Seriously a slingshot unlimited plan is like ~$90 and he can download a terrabyte and it wouldnt matter. Their caching works so well that all his downloading will be super fast and you dont have to worry about it.

After all that for some reason the 'time restriction' has ceased to work, but the URL filter is still working at least.  Yeah I know, make him pay.  He is a friend of the family (22) and my wife insists I help him out cos he is a student and his finances is a little unreliable.  By the way I am on the 20GB per month deal with unused data that rolls-over to the next month but the unused data has an expiry date at the end of that 'next' month.  Also came with one off 200GB data.  It's just that exceeding the data per month is eating into that 200GB.

It looks like changing the password would be a good solution after all.

Yes!  Your contract is for the physical connection and service delivered to your house.  You can change things like plans/calling packs...ect without breaching your contract.
