I've used Hamachi several times, but is there a way, or different VPN application, that doesn't require a client to be installed on the 'remote' computer?

SSH tunnelling? Only good for TCP though.

SSH looked complicated comapared to Hamachi ... port forwarding etc.

"Home" computer is XP Pro.

Hamachi is probably the best option for Windows XP.

You are probably correct, but there have been occassions when infrequent or once-only accesses to NAS drives would be nice without having to install the Hamachi (or any VPN) client.

Looking through my NAS manual [gasp!] and settings I see that I could turn on its inbuilt FTP server.

I can also see where in my router I can port forward my static IP address to the NAS, which articles on the 'net seem to indicate is a simple way to go to view files on the NAS.

Can anyone please confirm that if set up correctly I should be able to access the NAS from the internet using my static IP address?

You should be ok with that, but not much protection in terms of connection encryption, etc.

I asked which NAS because Synology and QNAP devices can host OpenVPN VPNs which should work fine. Not sure about yours though.

UPDATE: Have invoked both FTP and Web Server appliactions (seperately) BUT don't solve the problem of not wanting a client on the remote computer.

FTP requires either a client or some juggling with Network Places set up for the remote user, whilst Web Server requires access to the (Admin) NAS interface first.

All fine for me or trusted user, but neither means are useful for the occasional/infrequent remote user usage.

The NAS does have Ajaxplorer built-in, which would be excellent for the purpose, BUT unfortunately I cannot find any means to access the NAS (User/Password) and be taken directly to that app.

Back to the drawing board.
