could someone recommend a ethernet powerline adapter?

i'm wanting to build a NAS (running freenas, going to be a media server for two htpc)

my router is in my lounge but i would like the NAS to be in a spare room. Since i'm pretty sure you cant use a USB wifi adapter on freenas, i was thinking to try powerline adapter to make the connection to my router

the adapter would need to handle streaming HD content

thanks
Phil

You might be better off with a dedicated ethernet cable. Judging by some people's experience with these power adaptors.

They work. Better than nothing. I run a few around the house here to the other end cause wireless doesnt reach and running a cable was out of the question (no ceiling cavity). For normal use they are fine. Cant stream crap over them though from my experience. I have mediaportal running over my network - the HD channels just wont stream well..

Ok, but don't expect to get HD to stream well over power lines, they're not designed for it.

Why not stream HD?
I've sold a few sets that do that fine and got similar speeds as a standard 10/100 network cable/switch setup.
They were the Netgear XAVB5101 Powerline AV units which say 500mbps in the specs but you don't get that of course.

You just need to make sure you have them connected directly to a power socket on the wall, don't have them plugged into a power strip.

YMMV.

I've streamed HD over a set of older Netgears with 300mbps rating....

Copying files takes an age compared to ethernet cabling however.

Don't plug it in with powerboard, it uses "noise" as data signal..

I've got these all over my house - the older 300mbit ones too, I have my file server hooked up to a switch with a PS3 and the server on, raspberry pi's scattered all over also connected into the powerline network (I have quite a few of these I got given)

I've had no issues with streaming HD video, data rates are about 48-80mbit but if you're not transferring large files all the time they're fine for the task, and looks tidy too.

Which ones are people using and are happy with?

I have looked at the TPLink ones and they look pretty good but would like 'real world' recommendations

I'm using Netcomm ones, they're alright - the TPlink ones are alright.

maybe there is some hope for my plans

if people are streaming HD with the 300Mbps then the newer 500Mbps should be sweet

It's really going to depend on your house wiring, get a TP Link set and give it a go imo.
