A club I am in needs to replace a wireless router that has a wired connection to one of their networked computers and also allows venue hirers to go online wirelessly. A more secure separation between the club network and the casuals is required.

 

Is the DMZ feature of some routers, e.g. the TL-WR841ND, able to isolate wireless connections or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Would gargoyle on that router help??

DMZ is nothing to do with that.

You really need a VLAN capable device or router with a WiFi guest SSID functionality.

Hi, there are several ways to do this, I would recommend a VLAN for the wireless connection that hirers etc have access to, using this and an AP that can support multiple SSID's on seperate VLANs and your away.

Most Belkin's sold at Dick Smith support a wireless lan with an isolated Guest SSID function.
Basically it broadcasts two networks
1) ClubWifi + privatepassword - allows access to the LAN ports and internet
2) ClubGuests + password-you-supply-to-guests - allows access only to the internet - traffic to the LAN ports or computers connected to ClubWifi wont flow

Thanks again, guys. The isolated guest account sounds like the simplest answer. I have been looking at router options and there are quite a few offering that.

The Netgear routers have offered Guest WiFi for some years also.

I would suggest going the Unifi route with separate VLANs and corresponding SSID's. As long as you know how to set up the routing the Unifi set up is quite simple.

You will have a much better captive portal solution running the Unifi controller too.
