Hi All

My daughter wants to instal broadband in her house, but wants to do so via an ethernet cable, NOT WIFI. Telecom won't offer this option. Can you suggest anyone else (apart from Orcon, whom she won't deal with) who offer a wired connection?

if you can get normal broadband you can use it via an ethernet cable

Hi,

I'm not sure if I understand what you're asking for, as most Internet connections are wired, and any provided router will have the capability for wired connectivity. Is the customer in a rural location?

I can't think of an ISP supplied modem that doesn't have an ethernet port.

Just use the supplied modem from your preferred ISP, and turn off WiFi in the modem settings.

EDIT: Or if you really want to, just buy a modem of your choice that doesn't have WiFi and use that with your preferred ISP.

I think you are a bit confused of what your daughter is actually asking for,

Does she live rural in a RBI area?

If you don't want WiFi in your house you just need to turn off wi-fi on your modem via admin web-interface.
Then you can connect your PC/laptop via ethernet cable using 1 of 4 (in most cases) available ethernet ports on your modem.
If your PC/laptop is in another room, you will need long ethernet cable for that or use ethernet sockets in your walls.
If your house/room doesn't have ethernet sockets in walls and you want to have them you need electricians or other installers service. Providers don't do wiring in house, they just provide Internet. Everything beyond modem is not their responsibility.

Thanks everyone for your helpful comments. Are you saying that you can turn off WIFI on ANY modem? I just had a look at mine and can't see exactly how you could do this.

Why did Telecom tell her she could not have just a wired connection?

Telecom is what I have, so maybe that's why I can't see where to turn WIFI off?

Wifi can be turned off in the GUI of all Telecom routers that I know of.

Nothing to do with Telecom. All modems with wireless can have it turned off, including yours. You turn it off by accessings its internals.

Sounds like your daughter got the wrong end of the stick in her talk with Telecom.

Yes, she must have. But how do you turn it off - I don't know anything about this stuff. When I installed mine, I just went through the online steps they give you and set up WIFI.

How do you turn off WIFI - please give me the "Idiot's Guide". :)

But instead of checking the "Interface Enabled" box, you want to clear the "Interface Enabled" box. Then just save settings. WiFi should turn off.
