Hi all.

I live in a small 2 story home in Johnsonville, Wellington. Upstairs all my internet connected devices live in the man cave and my wife watches TV downstairs. Next week we have chorus installing fibre and they just done my scope work today. Because the free installation only covers a basic install chorus said the modem gets placed at the most practical spot for the installer, which happens to be downstairs and far away from anything that requires a hard wire like the Vodafone TV and all my devices upstairs. He did say they will install a point for Vodafone TV where my TV is placed as contracted by Vodafone.

So my issue is, how do I connect (hard wire) all the devices upstairs while having Vodafone TV downstairs? PC, Xbox One and PS4. I understand this is why we have Wifi, but I prefer my gaming devices at least to be hard wired. Is it possible to move the modem upstairs?

I have never done any wiring in my house before and would prefer it be done properly. Is this the sought of thing a electrician can do? Can anybody recommend me someone who could do the work? Or anybody who knows what they are doing with the right tools want a perk job? Finally, can somebody give me a very rough idea of what this type of work cost? $10's, $100's $1000's?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Are you sure this is fibre and not the Vodafone cable network? Do you have a hardwired connection now between the TV and upstairs?

Gigabit speed networking can run over 100m of Cat5 (or better) cable lengths easily, so if the ISP's device is in a corner of the house, you'll need to get a cable from that device to your cave. Whether this can be run under the floor, up through the inside of a closet, through the interior ceiling/floor or whether it has to be run through a hole in the wall and up a drainpipe (using outdoor rated cable) and through a hole in the wall upstairs (or similar) is over to you. An 8mm hole is enough for the cable, and with a crimping tool, youtube and some patience you can put your own plugs on.

Yes an Electrician can do it and they are more frequently running data cables within new houses while running the power wires. There are specialist data cabling companies. A Sparky might have soime creative ideas about how best to make the cable as invisible as possible.

What is the construction of the house? Floor/walls?

The ONT is connected to the modem/router via ethernet, so you could have the ONT installed downstairs, then run ethernet to the router upstairs.

This is Fibre, I am certain. I just moved into the property so am using wifi at the moment. For some reason only one phone jack works with my current ADSL. We do not have a phone line so cant test the others out but they don't work with ADSL

First off they are supposed to negotiate with you on how to do the install. You don't have to accept having the ONT in the place that suits them best. Obviously you need to be helpful and make it as easy as you can but just because Chorus is screaming about their contract and going broke doesn't mean you need to accept something that is unworkable.

Have a talk with the actual installers when they arrive...In my experience they hardly ever follow the plan done at scoping time anyway.

Remember be nice but don't put up with something you don't want.

Construction is just drywall and weatherboards, easily drilled into as the Sky Tech just done it the other day. The cave is directly above were the ONT is going to get installed. Could run something up the outside wall and drill into the man cave wall? Put Modem in Man cave and run a cable back down and connect up to the cable that chorus will install for Vodafone TV. Is there some type of female/female adapter that I could use or some other way to connect the cable? I hope this makes sense to you lot.

Thanks for that info, I had to check as a lot of people believe they have fibre already even though they are on cable.

If they follow the plan you've outlined I expect they will install a network cable that goes to the TV. If you get one installed from the TV to the man cave then you've got all the wiring in place to move stuff around. I'd install at least two cables between TV and man cave and you may just need to add a network switch or two to hook everything up.

That is interesting, because this guy was quite confident that it had to be the most basic setup. Since the room is right above where chorus want the ONT, maybe they could just run it up the outside wall. The only extra tool they would need is a ladder. There is also a power supply there too. Then run the Vodafone TV cable back down the outside wall, where they can then put it under the house (easy to do, the house is on stilts) and feed it up through where the Sky cable goes through.

It would be fine to have the ONT anywhere, within reason, of about 9metres away from where the fibre first reaches your house (the ETP). When I had a fibre install recently, the installers but the ONT in the garage and ran a ~5m length of Cat6 cable to where the modem/router is, under the house and up between an internal wall. I believe this was done with no extra charge, and I was helping to pull cables up thru the wall etc. However, they are only contracted to install up to the ONT for free, ONT to the router may be an additional charge as part of the install (or DIY)

Yeah I have noticed of late that they seem very confident and sure of themselves. They tried to tell one of my clients that they only had to replace like for like (in this case overhead even though the fibre went underground outside his house as did the power)... I had to go up the chain but I simply asked for the bit in the contract with Crown fibre that said that.

They even tried to tell another client that they were not responsible for reinstating the asphalt they cut up...oh really

So in a nutshell they have to negotiate the BEST way to do it with the owner (not the cheapest)

I'm a few blocks from you, they installed everything exactly where I wanted. That was an overhead install, it ran down the side of the house in a conduit they installed, under the house, up through a conduit I supplied, across the ceiling in a conduit they put in, then down into the top cupboard of a bedroom.

For you yes they can likely go up the outside of the house and go in there. I'd think about weather proofing though. You could have the ONT where they want then run your own Ethernet and put the router anywhere you like.

You should get the ONT put in the place you would need it if you were to star wire the house. ie where would you put your patch panel and modem/router if you completely rewired in cat 5/6

If that place is sensible for your current setup then you are golden. Also Chorus will be "happy" to put the ONT there....assuming you have power

Well that's what I would do anyway

Each time someone's had UFB installed in our street, the Chorus subbies have come and excavated the pavement tarseal.
I've asked through him each time to have the tarseal re-instated as in a number of cases it hasn't been done.

The latest install is right next to the UFB cabinet in my street (done this week). I'll wait a few weeks and see if anyone returns and re-tar seals it...

From what I gather they get the civil team to do it, ie a different group of guys. It can take a few weeks to get the street reinstated but it does get done ok.

In the case I'm thinking of they refused to reinstate my clients front yard...They know the rules alright, but I get the feeling the guys that do the scoping work are told to keep the cost as low as possible. So they just seem to try it on, hoping people don't know any better.

I don't know if there's a code of practice on how long it should be before any contractor who digs up a road or footpath is expected by the council (or other land owner) to make good and restore it to its original condition.

One of the UFB excavations in my street hadn't been tar-sealed after about two months I think it was, so I asked the Chorus guy I know if he could get it looked at:

All the ones I'm taking about are underground as we have no overhead wires in this area.
