I do not trust ipcams with port forwarding, most of them have back doors from what I've read and are easily compromised. So for the time being I have no access from the outside into my local network to view these cams when off-site. I run my cams through a Synology Diskstation (Surveillance Station Application). It works very well locally. Is there a secure way to access these feeds? For example should I setup a linux box that has the feeds running, then VPN remote desktop to that box. Might need some hand holding here. I know I could VPN to my NAS box but it houses some business data so worry about that. Hmm

VPN is the best option for you. Synology can do PPTP, L2TP and OpenVPN. A VPN just connects a client to a remote network. You wouldn't be connecting to your NAS per se. You are just connecting to a VPN server. If you have sensitive information on the NAS they should be protected by the permissions on the network share.

Setting up remote desking is just an insecure as port forwarding directly to the IP cam.

Would I then basically then have my orcon genius plug directly to this, then my home network to it? I then configure this VPN device to allow connections only from my macbook pro's macaddress. I then securely enter into my entire home network?

I have a webcam connected to my computer so i can view my fish tank when i'm not at home, i use remote desktop and a simple application that brings up the feed in a window over the RDP session, you might be able to do something similar if you can connect to the feeds over your home network from a windows PC

Also, I thought Orcon genius could do vpn but I see nowhere in all the settings to configure this. I want the most secure option available, not overly concerned with cost. Also, I want my Genius modem locked down as much as possible, for example I hear upnp is a risk? Sorry, this is a bit over my head. Ideally some sort of hardware device allows a specific laptop of mine into my home network and blocks anything else.

You don't need port forward for the cameras - you simply need a port forward (OR VPN if you're paranoid) to the Diskstation itself.

The app built for Synology is all you need. No need for a dedicated peice of hardware just for VPN.

The other, and by far the most simple, would be just use Teamviewer to access a local PC. No need for any set up. Just install the software. Easy and secure.
