Hello All
I have friends with a property which has a small business building approx 50m away from the main dwelling. The house has the copper landline supplying phone and broadband with a distance of approx 90m from the road. At this stage they have a copper line extension, underground, to the business for phone purposes only. They would like to have internet to their second premises.
They told me that there is clear sight between the main dwelling and the business building. I am not sure what the modem/router situation is. It might need new hardware.
Would someone be able to help me with suggestions?

Either a wireless link using some Mikrotik or UBNT hardware, or if you own the copper (ie it's not Chorus copper) a pair of VDSL2 extenders will deliver better performance as it's a full duplex solution, not half duplex like wireless.

This question is asked almost daily, with only very slight variations. Could one of the network guys write up the options in a nice format so it can be made sticky?

The property owners own the cable, I believe. So could they use this cable?

The property owners own the cable, I believe. So could they use this cable?

If it's cable within their property that is not part of the Chorus network, then yes.

I'll check what modem/router they have. Over cable it would surely be of quality that would allow them to have VOIP at the business building?
Would this be the hardware needed?

VoIP will work fine over wireless or VDSL. Only disadvantage of wireless is that wireless is half duplex so anything such as intensive SQL lookups will be impacted.

Something like the extender you listed will work fine, however I'd opt for the Netsys ones (Snappernet distribute both brands) as they're VDSL2 30a so offer 100Mbps symmetrical.

For something like this wouldn't running a cat6 cable down a piece of alkathene above ground be the cheapest easiest method?

If above ground is not possible what about using the copper as a draw cable (provided they own it)

Just contacted my friends. They own the Telephone cable(in the ground) from the dwelling to the business building. Existing router/modem at the house is Edimax FCCE EW 7209apg.

the inground cable, is it in a duct? could you run a second cable in there?

Running new cable through 50m of duct would be impossible without a draw wire. Using existing cable as a draw wire is also very risky unless you're certain about the integrity of the duct and the radius of any bends. If the cable snaps you're back to square one.

In this situation VDSL2 extenders would be the logical option.

You assume wrong, one device at each end of cable run.
