Hi,

I've had a look around in here and can't find my problem mentioned before. If it has then sorry.

I'm using an HP5450 ipaq, a windows 2000 PC with a Widcomm USB BT dongle and associated software. I can acticesync via BT fine. I can browse a shared folder on the PC fine. What I can't do is get network access via BT that will allow me to VNC local LAN conncted PCs or do anything.

So far I;ve made a new BT connection, selected 'connect to the internet', 'connect via a LAN access point', chosen the right PC device, the service is discovered ok and a shortcut created. If I then try to connect using this new shortcut, I get connection established and "connecting to:BT network access dialing from:work Using:bluetooth modem" and the ipaq looks as if it is trying to use a dialup connection instead of a shared LAN connection.

The PC is already part of a network getting an IP address via DHCP. I enabled ICS from this adaptor and set the IP address on the BT adaptor.

What have I missed / done wrong? :-)

Have a look on this guide. The Bluetooth software has two types of networking LAP and PAN.

LAP is a serial access over PPP, while PAN is a native network connection. The article shows how to use LAP, but later Widcomm installations default to PAN.

You can use PAN, but you have to manually configure the Bluetooth adapter on your Pocket PC.

Check firewalls, IP address conflicts, etc. There's an article in our Bluetooth Guides with a list of things to look at.

This is a good start.

I've looked at that guide and I seem to have different Windows bluetooth software. It came with the USB dongle and is Widcomm 1.2.2.18 without the advanced configuration options. I can see the network access option in local services but don't get the options screen shown in the guide. Is this old software I am using? If so, where can I find newer versions? Widcomm don't seem to have anything to download on their site.

Yep, version 1.2 is old, but it supports LAP ok. You don't have the same screens, but the concept of using ICS is the same.

You have to download the new drivers (if available) from the O&M that made the adapter.

Hi again.

I updated the Bluetooth software on windows and got it to work ok. Followed through the guide as before and still get problems.

I make a shortcut to "connect to the internet" as mentioned but when I try to use it I get the following -

connecting to BT network access

Dialing from: work

Using: Bluetooth null modem

Dialing 9, connect

and one time was asked for username, password and domain. From this point the Ipaq goes slowly or locks up with no internet access.

Any further ideas? The ipaq is allowed to connect by the desktop machine and can be seen ok.

You have to update your connection to disregard Dialing rules. The 9 is probably causing the problem.

How do I get the ipaq to disregard dialign rules? The only bit I know of is in the connections menu where you can modify bluetooth / wotk or internet settings. Neither work or internet have any dialing option setup yet the bluetooth does and if I remove it, the ipaq just asks for username and password next time I try internet access.

Is there a way to stop it trying to dial a number at all?

Sorry for all the (possibly dumb) questions, I;m at a bit of a loss with this one now. :-)

I don't have a h5450 here now. Are you running Windows Mobile 2003 or Pocket PC OS 2002 (the original one in this Pocket PC)? The three Pocket PC around here are running Windows Mobile 2003, and this is unchecked by default. There's an option when you go to Connection where you have Use Dialing rules and a button. You can uncheck that. You might have to look for it on your Pocket PC.

Using WinCE3.0 - is that PPC2002?

I just noticed in another thread that ICS must have the IP 192.168.10.* however my LAN uses 192.168.10.*

Is there any way round this without altering the LAN IP address, will 192.168.10.* work? Have I got it right that ICS must be enabled on the PC ethernet adaptor and not the Bluetooth adaptor?

Yes, this Pocket PC OS 2002. The dialing rules are On by default, so you have to change it.

ICS must use 192.168.0.1. If you have followed our guide, and your network uses 192.168.10.* then you're ok.
