Hi! I found this real good guide on remotely administering a Windows XP computer from a PocketPC PDA with Bluetooth at the following location:

Problem is, this is for Windows XP, and I use Windows 2000 Profesional (SP4). Is there any way to do something like this from Windows 2000 Professional? Can anyone point me in the right direction on this?

Yep, using terminal services on Windows XP Pro works very well. I don't think there's a TS for Windows 2000 Pro, only for Windows 2000 Server.

Another way of doing this is using VNC and PocketVNC. Or if you need remote access, try GoToMyPC (read our review).

I couldn't get it to work! Was going fine till I had to connect the ipaq to the server (my laptop). Just wouldn't connet. My laptop is called D800 so I tried to connect to //D800 and just D800. No joy. In the article he connects using an IP address but as I had no network cable plugged in my network adaptor had no IP address (?)

C'est la vie.

You have to use the laptop's IP address. Since you're connecting via Bluetooth I presume you're using ICS. If this is the case then its address is 192.168.0.1.

If you're not using ICS (Bridge for example), run CMD and execute IPCONFIG /ALL. You'll find the IP address there.

ICS? Internet Connection Sharing?

The laptop is not connected to the net in any way (am working away from home) so when I do an ipconfig I get a 'no network adaptor' or similar message. I don't know if the /all switch will make any difference (I can't check at the moment - am at work) Just thought, my IP address is allocated automatically - if I set up a static one - that may work....

How are you connecting the iPAQ to your laptop? ActiveSync or Bluetooth LAN Access?

Bluetooth Activesync.

I'm a bit new to this bluetooth malarky (and I'm supposed to be a geek!) so forgive me if I'm doing something dumb!

If you're using ActiveSync then your computer should be 192.168.55.100.

Freitasm, thanks for the info on VNC/PocketVNC. It seems that there are a few VNC options out there. The only thing is that from all I’ve seen, everyone says that they’re really slow compared to Terminal Services. Would you know if that’s the case, especially over a Bluetooth “network”? I’ll probably try it out and if it’s too slow for my needs, consider switching to XP on my PC. The XP Terminal Services is faster, right?? Thanks! -- Mike

I agree... PocketVNC is slow. Terminal Services was really good when I tried it. GoToMyPC was really good, but since it's not free it's only good if you have to use it while away from your home or office.
