I’ve been having a problem with my internet connection for a while now – which I suspect is due to a router problem.

But just before I go out and get a new one, I thought I’d give this forum a try (first post) and see if there’s a possibility that the bug has nothing to do with the router.

The current home setup I have is 3 computers linked to a 3Com LAN/Wireless router, with 2 comps on LAN and 1 on wireless.

All have their DNS fixed (our ISP is ihug), DHCP is enabled and IP addresses are fixed as well.

The issue is that our router keeps getting disconnected from the web.

This happens several (more than 10x) a day, can happen a few times within a span of 5 minutes, and it happens regardless of whether net use is idle or not.

Every time it happens, one of us will need to access the router admin and manually reconnect it… Sometimes it doesn’t reconnect immediately and several tens of clicking is needed to get it up again. Then, in no more than 5 minutes it disconnects again.

Sometimes we’ll need to unplug the router, replug and reconnect (but this doesn’t always work either).

It seems as though the router goes through a daily phase of having fun with it’s users.

Initially, we all thought that this was an ISP issue, but I think it’s safe to say now that this can’t be the case (as several disconnections a day will surely lead to some massive public complaints from disgruntled customers).

Furthermore, the problem started when we were with another ISP, in our old residence and it still exists with our new ISP here.

Location is City Central.

Any thoughts as to if this could be any other issue (perhaps wrong settings with router or something) – or if
it’s time for the 3Com router to be replaced?

Thanks for any advice!

Post sync speeds, noise margins, attenuation. Do you have a master splitter filter or individual filters on POTS devices. Have you removed phones, sky decoder etc. to see if this influences connection stability.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

I'm not home at the moment but will check these when I do get back.

At this stage just a POTS filter but even disc phone (no SKY), the router still disconnects on occassion.

Would the reliance on the POTS filter as opposed to a master filter be a real issue for connection?

Thanks! :)

If you only have the one phone then a single POTS micro filter should be fine. As Spyware said posting your stats is usefull.

If you can get hold of another modem from freinds just to see if there is an issue with the 3com is probably worth it, especially if you started noting this type of issue in your previuos location.

Do you know roughly how far you are from the exchange?

Will post the stats once i'm home.

I'm on Pitt St and that's less than 1k from the Mayoral Drive exchange, so I don't think that there is an issue with distance from the exchange (hopefully).

Right:

Data rate:
Upstream: 800Kbps
Downstram: 5312Kbps

Noise margins:
Upstream: 14db
Downstream: 12db

Attenuation
U: 29db
D: 23db

Anything there that might help shed some light on the situation?

Hi, the attenuation is good, indicating that your are in the 1.5km loop length, however the S/N of 12dB is more what you would expect with a line over twice that length, this is also reflected in the connection speed that is more like a 3.5km line not a 1.5km one. You should have near full 7Mb/s downstream. Something is raising the noise floor of the line.

I would check there are no other devices on the line, is there a security panel that the phone line could be passing through.

I still would take the next step and try another router if you can get hold of one from a freind, it could be that the Front end or ADC has gone noisy. See if it reports simlar poor S/N figures, and keeps restaring the link, if another router performs similarly then I suggest you get Telecom involved in checking the line (do this via your ISP).

Thanks Cyril.

I'll try your suggestions first before I proceed to scouting about for a new router.

I live in an apartment block, so perhaps that could have some sort of influencing factor on the line coming in (not sure if it would though).

Will report back on any progress :)

Right, we disconnected the phone from the wall to test. Router and phone are connected at different points in the apartment.

Data rate for downstream has bumped up to 7616.

Noise levels remain the same, in fact downstream has went up to 14db.

Sorry, not too sure what you meant here? (not that familiar with the terminologies)

, it could be that the Front end or ADC has gone noisy.

Ahhhh, so sounds like the filter on the phone was not working properly or there is none. I presume the phone has a filter on it. The filter is for the phone, not the DSL modem, however normally you have to use a filter just to get the RJ11 jack to the modem.

Edit: 14dB Noise margin is more like what you should expect, as is the speed. Sounds to me like your phone is not filtered.

Hi there

How do i determine this information which you asked for, noise, attenuation, speedtest etc etc.
I would like to know this to see if I am having similar problems.

Thanks

Through your web browser log into your modem and normally there is a stats page or similar that shows the ADSL or WAN status.

What modem/router do you have.

From other PM's with fbnz it would indeed appear that there was an unfiltered phone across the line causing problems.
