Hello,

I have a Huawei HG659 Router. I can connect to the 2.4 and 5 ghz bands with a number of devices. I also have a Tplink wifi 2.4ghz AP on the same LAN that works with all devices.

I bought a Nexus 6p and it only connects to the tplink AP. No luck with either 2.4 or 5 ghz on the Huawei Router.

I tried changing settings, passwords, resetting, channels, turn on/off, security settings on the HG659 with no luck.

BUT what puzzles me is that the HG659 has got a Guest network option, and I can connect to it with the Nexus, both at 2.4 and 5 ghz. But it's got limitations on the firewall that I can't change. (like no access to the router settings or LAN network shares)

So what could be the reason for the Nexus not being able to connect to the "normal" wi fi but only to the "guest"?

What software version has is the HG659 got? Just need 2 digits after the Bxx

Thanks for quick reply. Not sure which version (not here with me now) but I have upgraded the firmware Sunday to see if it would fix it with the latest available

Edit it's a Vodafone firmware but I am with unlimited

Oddly enough, I have the same issue with my Nexus 5X, sometimes it fails to connect to my 630B (I think, it is the adsl black Spark one that only has 2.4GHZ wifi) or 659B routers. The 659 is doing all the dhcp and dns stuff and the 630 is just an access point. Doesn't seem to happen to any other phone in the house. Driving me nuts. I am at the point where I am setting up a home server using a raspberry Pi doing DHCP and DNS and a few other things to see if that fixes the issue.

I don't think that would help. I think the issue is with the wifi security itself, not the dhcp server. I connect to the 659 via LAN with a tplink WAP and the 659 does the dhcp. I think it's some sort of security setting but I changed everything I could (i think).

My issue seems to be that it connects, but then says it has no internet even though it seems to have an IP. This led me to suspect DNS or DHCP. You have just reminded me though when I rejigged everything, I set it to WPA2 only, I wonder if I set it to WPA/WPA2 or whatever the next lowest standard is and try it with that. I didn't have these issues before all the recent changes. It is not the phone because it doesn't do it on any other wireless network I connect to.

So, what I did over the weekend was buy a D-Link DAP-1650 access point. I put it into access point mode and I changes it's network settings to match the HG659. I also allowed wpa/wpa2 mode (aes and tkip) so there is some fallback for legacy devices and just as a test. I now have the 659 doing DHCP, routing and DNS, and the DAP-1650 just being an access point. Everything is working properly now. It has only been a couple of days but, touch wood, the problem has not returned. My phone had connected every time and not had the dreaded ! mark on the wifi icon in the status bar.

I also now have AC speeds dropping down to good N speeds upstairs everywhere. The 630 took it from bad to marginal, the DAP-1650 has made it good everywhere.

Well well problem fixed. I chatted with a Huawei rep and they were actually very good. They got someone from Malaysia to call me back at the time I wanted and we went through all the settings on the router together even though I was sure I checked everything and also I was sure that by upgrading the firmware all settings were re-set. In the end it was something about blocking a certain IP number (my phone's IP) stupid thing but fixed. Good on ya Huawei anyway excellent customer service, honestly impressed.
