I've got some new routers that I am testing and writing configuration guides for:

On the list:
Edgerouter Lite PoE
Mikrotik RB3011UiAS-RM
Mikrotik RB750Gr3

If anyone wants to know any specifics on these routers when I am writing the guides / testing then fire away. I'll put tests here once I do them and have got some new oDroids I need to pick up to assist with these tests.

However - here is an early speedtest (by early - I spent 5mins on configuration) of the Mikrotik RB750Gr3 (a sub $110 Mikrotik router) I will be writing a configuration guide for with Fasttrack enabled likely suitable as a cheap router for home users:

Since many people have asked about the Mikrotik RB3011UiAS-RM I have got a little surprise in time for Christmas (thanks to GoWiFi) so will think of something and give one away to one lucky punter - stay tuned.

Mikrotik.... they have great hardware really reasonably priced but omg their UI is terrible. If they sorted that they could be the absolute killer hardware.

Oh wise one can i ask you something.

If you use 2 2x2ac device, on a 4x4 router,
Will your information travel faster ie will they use all 4 channels on the router to maximise traffic flow or is it matter complicated than that. Thanks

Hey Michael,

I have the Mikrotik RB750GL - how does this Gr3 differ? Is it just the USB/SD ports? Or is the hardware (RAM/MEM) a step up as well? Sorry I am no expert and have had the 750GL for a few years now with no problems. Just wondering what advances have been made in that time really, in their entry level devices.

Cheers,

Ben

Real g33ks use command lines. :)

I personally don't have an issue with the Winbox GUI, but do a lot of config by command line because it's quicker for lots of things.

Excellent plan!  wink

Presumably the "idiots guide" for the 5-port ERPoe-5 will also be relevant to the 3-port ERL-3?

Also a guide to using these routers with the new DOCSIS 3.1 "FibreX" cable plans would be appreciated.  tongue-out

The Gr3 is a much more powerful dual core processor. The processor in the original model was very low spec and those routers struggled.

Yes saw the mikrotik newsletter this morning. Very keen to see the new rb750 performance.

And winbox is awesome. One of the best I reckon. Much better than edgeOS (or whatever ubiquiti call it) anyway.

Good to know - thanks - I am only on VDSL and I haven't really noticed any sign of my 750GL _struggling_ but then again I am not sure how I would notice?! Perhaps when I move to fibre (who knows when) that might change and I will need an upgrade.

More or less NAT throughput on the Mikrotiks. I've already got (and am using) an Edgerouter Lite but people have asked about the Mikrotiks. The Edgerouter PoE is just there since I don't want to destroy my own Edgerouters configuration whilst writing a tutorial ;)

You'll be limited to the speed of the 2x2 802.11AC device.

Faster CPU meaning more suitable for faster connections. In my (limited) testing today I was able to get Gigabit throughput with just 35% CPU load so it is looking very promising.

I have not had much of a chance to play around with this today (been setting up some other new toys that arrived today) but will look at this tomorrow.

Really looking forward to reading about your experiences with the Mikrotik RB3011UiAS-RM. I have just purchased one - connecting to Bigpipe Fibre. Would be great to compare configuration - have reviewed your previous posts. Indeed have joined geekzone just so I can follow this thread! If I can assist with testing - please do let me know. I would be keen to understand if you disable to default bridge in your setup.

@michaelmurfy are you still testing these? Be curious to see throughput / CPU utilisation on the Mikrotiks with/without Fasttrack / Fastpath if you're still running them...

Yes I need to - just been quite busy and last week was thrown off a bit with the quakes / flooding. Planning to this week.
