Buyers beware... Until I get some of the following problems sorted (or return the unit), the D-LINK DSM-320 seems to be a poor performer:

  • poor performance over wi-fi for movies: 6 meters from the AP, playing .mov or .mpeg over wi-fi will not go anywhere. Jitter, picture dropouts, no sound.
  • poor performance over wi-fi for pictures: while trying to load images it won't load folder list, or if loading list won't load picture complaining of "format" problems.
  • poor performance over wi-fi for songs: no sound, stutter
  • user interface problems: infrared seems to be "weak" and requires direct line to the device, any angle and it won't work
  • user interface problems: only STOP button works while music is playing. PAUSE, FFWD, FRWD, NEXT, PREVIOUS won't work, with an "invalid action" icon showing on the TV.
  • MP3/WMA problems: although all files were extracted with correct tag information, the player will not recognise this, rendering the Album, Artist, Genre classification useless.
  • MP3/WMA problems: playlists must be created on your computer, the player doesn't have an option to create a playlist

The problems with wi-fi are solved if using a wired connection, but this is not the case for this device, is it? Also, using a wired connection does not fix the problem with empty Album, Artist, Genre classification, or the inability to create playlists.

D-LINK local support asked me to RMA the product, but some of the problems are not on the device. For example, the server seems to be responsible for creating the content list, and tags are not correctly extracted. I'm now waiting for a reply from D-LINK Australia via e-mail. If nothing comes in the next day or so this unit is going back.

An update: a new firmware is available for download (DSM-320 1.02ww2), and a new server software. Unfortunately neither fixes the problems. Local D-LINK told me simply to return the unit, since they don't have idea on what's the problem.
