Hi all,

Recently thought I'd upgrade routers from my Fritzbox 7360 to the D-Link 880L. I expected to get faster wifi speeds with the latter due to it being a newer generation router and dual band. So far I've only managed 7 mbps down on both ethernet and wifi. When I use the Fritzbox, I'm getting ~24-50 mbps down, and ~100 through ethernet.

Wondering if anyone has had similar issues and how to improve the speeds of the new router. Advertised speeds are much higher, and I would expect higher than the older 7360. I've tried changing the various settings on the 880L wireless settings, to no avail. Any assistance/advice would be much appreciated.

I'm on NowNZ's Fibre 100.

D-Link 880L - https://www.speedtest.net/result/6115229304 (slow ~7 mbps D, through ethernet and wifi)

Fritz box 7360 - https://www.speedtest.net/result/6115243877 (faster ~50 mbps D, over wifi)

Cheers

R

To begin with if your ISP is NowNZ try their server for both tests.

Also I would note down the channels/frequencies the Fritzbox has chosen to broadcast on and manually set the D-Link to use those for testing.

Trying with NowNZ server gave similar results.

The Fritzbox and D-Link are setup the same (i.e. broadcast, etc). I'm thinking the router is setup incorrectly, but I would assume that would render no internet connection.. Or it's faulty?

Cheers

Have you got the latest firmware on the D-Link?

Yes I've checked the firmware, it is the latest. Might give DD-WRT firmware a go.

1.08WW?

Don't believe the auto update thing.

I'm on VDSL only and get pretty much the max over wi-fi - around 30mbps.

Here's a link to the firmware - which I believe is the latest.

Updated to the latest firmware, thanks for that. Hasn't made any difference to the speeds though.. can't figure out why I'm getting such slow speeds.. this is a faster/newer router!

there were some big problems with the 2880 that still exist, maybe the 880 is just rebranded frimware, I personally wouldnt use a consumer grade dlink router, id return it and get a asus or netgear.

Righto so I've got it working to what I expected (~96 mbps down):

It would seem a factory reset using the button on the back of the router did the trick. Then setting up everything from scratch again. Excellent.

That's odd. Anyway glad you've got it sorted.

Another useful tip is to set the router to reboot every night. There is a setting under administration or something. I found this helps reliability.
