Hi All,

I am getting Fibre installed at my house and was looking for a new router with PoE, I found the Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X Passive PoE

This router has Passive PoE, Can I use this router with non-PoE devices, I will be connecting the EdgeRouter to another pre-existing router using a Crossover cable all other connections will be straight-through(T568B).

On a side note has anyone used this router with Spark (a NZ ISP) I am looking at getting the 900/400 Mbps plan will it provide enough throughput?

What preexisting router are you using and why do you need two routers?

Also, auto MDI-X has been a thing for ages now and you don't need to worry about crossover/straight through cables anymore.

The preexisting router will only be used to supply wireless until I get a new AP, this is also why I wanted PoE.

Can you confirm if you have the Edgerouter X with passthrough PoE or the Edgerouter PoE with packet Acceleration.

You need to turn on the poe feature. default its off

Yes. i have got the same product with spark fiber and an Ubiquiti wireless AP.

NO. Passive means its a 24V passive standard used by Ubiquiti for its wireless AirMAX and Unifi radios. Does not comply with 802.3af/at/bt and won't power such devices.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

You can still turn that power on and off per port though.

Thanks guys, I understand that it doesn't comply with 802.3. I was going to use Ubiquiti's AP's devices just at the moment I can make use of my ASUS router for wireless until I get one.

Just go with the Edgerouter PoE or the Edgerouter Lite and use PoE injectors if you're getting or planning on getting gigabit fibre.

The ER-X may work however I've had experience with these not performing to the same standard as the Lite or PoE.

Thanks, you are right I should just go for the Lite router and use PoE injectors.

Will the below router work on the Spark fibre network and get the speeds I am looking for (900/400) ?

I use the ERL on BigPipe Gigabit UFB and it performs really well. You won't have an issue. Take a look at my guide in my signature.
