Looking for some guidance around how I can extend range of our single VDSL router (HG659) at home. Apologies if this has been answered elsewhere, please provide any links which maybe helpful if I'm regurgitating something.

We live in a multi storey flat, with our VDSL connection coming into the house in the bottom storey, in the corner. This isn't ideal, and is impractical for us to try move this connection to a more central location.

We have tried using Powerline adaptors (Wifi adaptor - DLink DHP W-310AV) to try extend the range in the other corners of the house, but it seems the connection cuts out at various times and isnt stable enough - we have triple phase wiring in the house that differs between upstairs and downstairs, i'm not sure if this causes issues with the powerline adaptors? Funnily enough, the Dlink wired Ethernet adapter (DHP 309 AV) seems to work fine when linked upstairs and downstairs to where the router is but this only has one Ethernet output.

The question - we have a whole bunch of old ADSL routers (HG556a, TG589vn v2) - can we use any of these along with the Powerline adapters to extend the wifi signal throughout the house? Being pretty cash strapped, we'd rather have a play around and see if we can jimmy out a solution using existing devices. Or alternatively, open to any reasonably cheap options which will solve our issue.

Appreciate in advance.

The hg556a would make a good wifi extender using the ethernet from the stable Powerline - try the instructions here:

This is also what you are trying to do:

Cheers Jon - should've checked the vody site first as well (duh!).

So technically, just need to plug the stable powerline into the "wap" (HG556), follow those instructions and hopefully we should be rocking?

Yes, plug the powerline ethernet into LAN 1 of the second modem (the WAP). You will need to first connect to the hg556 directly with a network cable from a computer to do the initial setup of disabling DHCP and setting the SSID and password to be same as main modem wifi.

So managed to suss this out over the weekend, range extended succesfully (cheers JonB for the links) but getting pretty crap signal through the HG556 where it drops out randomly (about 1-5 sec) unless you're sitting in the same room. Have a couple of IPTV boxes right next to it which seem to work fine on WIFI.

Any other checks I can do to ensure I've changed all the settings to what they need to be?

Try and connect the IPTV boxes with ethernet cable to the Hg556a if possible, in case they are hogging most of the WiFi bandwidth.
Can try using the other spare router as the range extender, instead of the Huawei in case that has more stable signal.

I would not be trying to stream anything to IPTV boxes over WiFi.

Sorted fellas. The new setup is as follows:

HG659 connected to Dlink powerline adaptor in one part of the house.

HG556 connected to the other powerline in the other part of the house (via LAN), and then 2 IPTV boxes connected via lan to 556 giving them both about as stable of connection as they can get (was pinging around 90ms to San Jose server, with about a 3 sec buffer when initially loading a stream but nothing after that - I can live with that).

Apple devices seem to be a bit finicky when connecting to the HG556 so changed the wifi SSID to be different to 659 again, so Apple devices can pick up the original router (if in range) as that seems to offer a more stable connection. Everyone else can pick and choose which router they want to connect to.

I've got a spare telecom router + a spare powerline adapter left. Might have a jam with that too.

Appreciate the help! Def a lot easier than i thought it would be - should've done it a while ago!
