Is this a good idea or not. Will heat in the summer & cold in the winter effect it?

It will probably die regularly, but they are cheap. I've done this a couple of times due to recabling not being a practical option, but with a clear warning that replacing the switch will be a regular event.

You'd be surprised though at how long the switch will sometimes last.
