I've got an ageing QNAP and want to replace this with a TVS-473. Over the last couple of years I've never really got to grips with setting it up correctly (ie. don't have the know-how) and I need help with the proposed new purchase. Reading/Using the Qnap forums has grown tedious as ppl often give part of an answer, and assumed knowlwdge is supposed to fill in the blanks.

So - I'm wondering if there's anyone in the Wairarapa area prepared to help me setup the new NAS for an appropriate fee? Or anyone prepared to travel? As I'm on holiday atm, I'm flexible on time (plus I've not bought the thing yet!). But at this stage I'm hoping to establish a suitable (QNAP perhaps) techie, a fee and a timeslot to nail this job. We could then PM to establish further detail.

Or you could find an IT guy that can setup to your requirements and then courier it to you.

Time to find a new industry!

In my experience this is a wider issue. Sometimes it can be surprisingly hard to get clear answers to things.

I have a QNAP TS-651 (one model back but 6 drives). I set mine up as RAID 6 for dual redundancy. Its pretty easy to set them up just make the pool as big as can afford to start as while you can easily swap drives for bigger there are some limitations once the storage pool is made. To change mine now I would have to fully refomat to say go back to Raid 5 (single redundancy).

I am actually looking at selling it because to be honest I needed a slightly better streaming box as I had moved to using Plex away from home rather than just serviio/plex at home and had more in higher rez so then brought a Synology DS916+ and have found it way way better to run. For me I would now go Synology over QNAP as they setup is kid level. I used there setup over raid this time and it has run hassle free (but then so pretty much does the QNAP to be fair).

I did buy them over a year apart and have different wants at the time QNAP 6 drives and Synology Streaming. So if no luck I would definitely give the QNAP setup a go just work out what redundancy want (ie Raid 5 or 6) and what can afford in drives (so make pool biggest to start).
