Hi all...

I actually wanted to video what happened to prove Apple is stuffing up our internet connection. Im still on copper, we use a wireless router with really good speeds for crappy dsl+2 (22Mbps down and 1 up).. its ok for us. Theres three of us living here, my wife uses a samsung android, I use windows 10 just on a laptop or my samsung tablet. My 11 year old son has just started a new school and theyve basically said we had to go buy a new tablet, they said they are an "Apple" school (whatever that means, I guess their tech is Apple).. so we got this 128GB iPad.
Im not usually online while my son is but last night we finally figured out why the connection lagged out like hell. It was when he connected his apple device! I didnt believe it but we tested it three times, when he'd disconnect the connection just rocketed back up, when he connects we bearly got 6Mbps down and like a zillion up :(
Has anyone ever heard of this before? If so why does Apple cause this? We can disconnect and reconnect the android devices with no difference in the net speed.
Whys Apple always bitchy like this? :(

The problem is simply iPhones / iPads etc run backups when they're connected to the internet to iCloud - this saturates your very limited upload speed causing your connection to run slow. Many phones / tablets do this sort of thing.

If you've got 22Mbit down, 1Mbit up then you should really look into getting VDSL installed. It'll improve your internet speeds greatly and in most cases won't cost you any more than you're paying now. Check https://chorus.co.nz/maps or with your ISP to see the best broadband you can get.

Firstly, it's not Apple being bitchy.

The most probable cause is the user has set it up to mirror photos or back itself up to iCloud. This will be saturating your upstream connection, which will negatively influence your downstream as well.

Either let it finish syncing, or turn that off in settings.

Arrh yes, thanks guys, will look at his settings. Yeah Mike I should be behind into gear and get VDSL. Same costs. Im just like If it anit broken dont mess with it type of person I guess.

Depending on the age of your ADSL modem, that might be a good strategy.Older models don't support VDSL and thus could cost you ±$150

It's not auto-update; it's auto-backup. Look in Settings/Accounts & Passwords/iCloud and turn iCloud Backup off.

Schools seem to block icloud backup so all the stuff they do at school will not backup till they get home for the day. Friend is on a skinny wireless plan and their kids ipads quickly hit the limit because of the school blocking it on their lan.

iCloud backups don’t run unless you’ve got the device plugged in to charge, or you manually tell it to backup.
Photos will upload to iCloud automatically though, if any of the Photo options are enabled.

Having hundreds of kids doing icloud backups (not to mention firmware upgrades) can saturate internet connections.

Good point but at the end of a school day I would say most kids would sit on the couch with their device chargin while they play games on it. Either way most kids would charge their devices at home.

A class full of kids all charging their iPads at school with power cords everywhere would be a health and safety nightmare.

I've found people complaining about it on overseas forums too.

Is there a simple way to make a Spark modem prioritise ethernet traffic that is using internet (over wifi)?

Anyone know if switching to fibre would be enough for the hungry apple devices to let other devices have a bit of internet capacity?

Hungery Apple devices? Is Apple the only company that has worked out what to use the cloud for? :-)

As to fibre, I have 100/20, We have a Macbook, work soft client, 3 iPhones, 3 iPads, A streaming only 14yo girl (runs that to my iMac over wifi) and never an issue.

As to a backup, allow it to complete if its a new iPad. After that its incremental, so unless its used for taking screeds of daily photos, I can't see the issue. You could check to ensure there are no app updates or iOS updates. If there are, run that after hours. Then turn off auto app update and do that manually. If there are a lot, that can take a wee while , much more so on your 20mbit DSL
