Hello I'm not really computer savvy when it comes to routers and such but this problem has been doing my head in for quite a while now.. I was hoping someone who is knowledgeable on this subject might be able to help or maybe point me in the right direction(sorry if I posted this in the wrong place).

Okay so really quickly from the beginning.. I play an MMO called Elder Scrolls Online on PC. I've played it for almost 3 years and my latency has always been at a stable 200 ping. In the past few months however, it now stays at a constant 350+ ping. I referred to the games manual on latency issues and it suggested I open some ports. I've tried port forwarding the requested ports and checking to see if they're Open at portchecktool.com but it gives me an error saying 'Connection timed out'. When I tried disabling the firewall/windows defender the error then switched to 'Connection refused'. Sometimes port 80 would say it's Open but the rest of the ports would still give me 'Conneciton timed out'.

My ISP is Slingshot and I am on VDSL. The router is a TP-Link TD-W9970 V1.0. OS is windows 10.

If there is anything more you'd like to know just ask and I'll be happy to give as much information as I can.. thanks

You should not need to forward ports for any game unless you are hosting the server.

Have you done any trace routes to see where latency spikes?

It's probably down to changes in peering in that time period. Going by that traceroute traffic destined to US severs is being routed through Hong Kong to be scrubbed (of DDoS attacks etc.) when it could be going direct into the US and being scrubbed there.

Perhaps @Sounddude can comment.

If the servers are in the Asia area, I would say the impact is caused in the Sea-Me-We cable cut :-(

Vocus has a new cable system coming live soon from Perth to Singapore which will bypass this cable as it seems to be cut fairly often.

So does that mean there is nothing I can do and it's all on my ISP's end? if I gave them a call could they reroute it if that's even possible?(lol)

My friend who is with another ISP and lives one block away from me gets <200 ping ingame.. if changing my ISP as a last resort is the case then so be it, we've been with slingshot since 2004 but I need my gaming binge man.

That sounds interesting. But isn't there another cable that goes from NZ straight to the US? why can't NZ ISP's route it through there? or is this because I'm with Slingshot which I assume is under Vocus?

See the bit where it says OUTBOUND, that does not mean port forwarding. It only applies if you had locked down your outbound traffic with some firewall rules.

To best access The Elder Scrolls Online, you should configure your routers to open the following outbound ports:

It looks like their CDN setup is routing you to asian based servers. Our links up through to asia are generally not as good as our links to the USA. The only way to get around this would be to look into a VPN or DNS service that forced you to use their US servers. So nothing to do with your ISP, your router, all to do with the gaming company.

Ahh okay makes sense. I guess a VPN service looks like my best option then although its quite a premium to pay on top of broadband bills and such. Thanks for the clarification.
