Due to some technical limitations, it's quite challenging to run a physical cable between our soon-to-be-installed ONT and the modem. A quick research online didn't tell me much (it's uncommon issue, I reckon), apart from running a pair of powerlines adapters.

Is there any smart option out there? Wifi to ethernet adapters?

That’s a shame.

Probably the most adequate is to use power line networking, but that is very prone to wiring quality as well.

Is there really no way to get a cable installed, have you asked a competent data cabler, you may be surprised as to the options.
But as coffeebaron says it would be better to put the router at the ont the and use mesh from there on the lan side.

But do try for a cable option

Wireless between your router and ONT is a terrible idea.

This will just cause immense pain come any sort of fault..

Yes, I dont get this. You get super cool fibre then bridge it with wireless?? Assuming the OP is a house owner, it cant be more than "can you put a new power plug here" Its just cable running, less cost if its not hooked to the switchboard.

Do it once and do it right, you pay the same bill every month, why compromise it to avoid a one off cost

My ONT was installed exactly where I asked, which involved a relatively weird cable run. This was the early days of fiber when they seemed to be less busy and more helpful.

My apology for not explaining it clearer in the first place.

The odd requirement is resulted from a combination of a commercial property (pre-laid fibre cable and it's not easy to place the ONT where we want) and the need for ethernet-fed machines (EFTPOS and a printers) on the farther end.

The Chorus tech advised us to get power line adapters so the modem can be placed where ethernet connection is needed. However, like most people I don't appreciate the idea hence seeking wisdom here.

If I get the Wifi set up close to the ONT (to make the most of the speed), what gear do I need to turn Wifi into ethernet connection?

if you can't run a cable then wouldn't it be best to have the router next to the ONT then powerline to where the eftpos machines etc are and put a switch/hub in?

To answer your questions...
Doable - Absolutely.
Recommended - HELL NO

Especially if you are running important stuff like eftpos.

The money you would spend on the wireless gear to do this "properly" would be better spent on a decent data cabler.

Are there any telephone cables between where the ONT and EFTPOS terminal is / will be? Sometimes they can be re-purposed for Ethernet. Even if the link rate is only 10mbit, that will still be plenty for EFTPOS and a printer.

If you do have to use WIFI, I reckon that point to point WIFI would be best. Which would be dedicated to just the EFTPOS and printer. And then setup a second WIFI network for other devices.

Also do you intend to provide WIFI to staff / customers? If so, make sure that you setup proper isolation between them and your mission critical stuff. For security, and so a software update or similar wont stop the EFTPOS from working.

I honestly didn't think of the possibility of running ethernet through the phone cable; will ask our cable guy to see if this is practically doable.

Or can I get an AP that's capable of operating in "Client mode", so I can get Wifi signal from modem and then offer it to EFTPOS and print though RJ45 ports?

@GeekRay You can, but don't. As WIFI is a shared resource. If a customer maxes out your Wifi, your EFTPOS will stop working. Even if the customer can't actually access the EFTPOS data. This applies even across different WIFI networks that are operating on the same frequencies. For example, there are a least 4 different Wifi networks that are using the same frequencies as my 2 access points. (8 total, they are the neighbours wifi) If I start moving lots of data over my Wifi, it will make the neighbours Wifi run slower. Simply because the available radio spectrum would now be busy.

Use 5GHz for the point to point link. (as 5 GHz is more directional and less subject to congestion). And use 2.4GHz for the lower importance stuff. Also only use BGN for the 2.4GHz. As a simple way of bandwidth limiting. As you don't want someone using the Wifi to take up all of the available bandwidth, and stop the EFTPOS from working.

Edit to add

Also consider if your internet has an outage. As that would mean no EFTPOS. You should consider getting a router that supports failover to a backup link if the main link fails. but you would then want that setup so only EFTPOS would use the backup link.

Have you considered just getting a mobile EFTPOS terminal that has an inbuilt SIM card and cellular modem? Sure, the rental fees are more expensive. But if it stops working, you just phone and lodge a fault. So support is easier.

How much sales would you lose if EFTPOS is not working for just 1 day?
