Guys, first post and apologies as I am a total newbie and if this has already been addressed.

New build house with pre installed ethernet cabling etc. ONT and main wifi modem in the garage.

Lounge and Office patched to the modem through the inbuilt ethernet. The problem is that the wifi in the garage doesn't extend upstairs so hoping to use an old Vodafone HG556a modem as an extender in one of the bedrooms. I have this patched to the main modem via ethernet however don't understand how to set this up correctly on the same network.

Any help would be appreciated.

honestly dont bother its old and, well old, you would be better picking up an hg659 or a fritzbox up off trademe and using that as an access point.

... or much better, get a real Wireless Access Point, such as a Ubiquiti UniFi UAP-AC-LITE

yea that too but given they are wanting to reuse something like the hg556a im guessing they are on a budget

No budget issues, just had the old router in the house. Really looking for advice as to the best way to get internet around the house.

Ill look at the item mentioned above if thats the best option?

Ubiquiti WAPs are Powered over Ethernet (PoE).

As mentioned, the ONT and router are in the garage. The Nvidia Shield in the lounge is wired back through to the router as is the PC upstairs. The wifi router in the garage however doesnt extend upstairs hence the original question. So ill create an access point in one of the bedroom to hopefully extend the wifi up there. Would a simple Google Wifi be able to be used as an access point or would you again recommend something like the Ubiquiti Unifi or the Fritzbox? The wifi downstairs is fine but upstairs its pretty much non-exitant.

WiFi will usually only cover one floor, so your problem is not unusual.

You need a WAP upstairs and downstairs for best results.

google wifi is a mesh setup, you can either connect them with cables or they can wirelessly mesh together to get signal where its hard to cable.

wired access points are generally the best solution and preform better, and a mesh setup would be the second best option.

its really up to you what way you want to go

explain, if the star point is there and decent star wiring in place (2 to most locations and 4 to the main tv etc) it doesnt matter if its there.

again explain if its your only AP then yes not the best idea but if you used the garage as a workshop or its a garage workshop then why not?

i want good wifi in my garage too.
