Hi all,

I’ve recently been given Google Wifi through Orcon, which seems to be working great apart from having a double NAT on my Xbox One.

After some research I believe this is due to the setup that’s required (ONT Box to Orcon Modem to Google Wifi.) The reason the Google Wifi can’t be pluggged straight into the ONT is because it lacks VLAN Tagging which Orcon uses.

My question is would putting the Orcon modem/router into bridge mode eliminate this problem? And if so are there any specific things I need to do like setting a static IP on the Google Wifi puck?

Hi, you could try bridge the Orcan modem, not tried it or seen how its configured, alternatively a small managed switch to drop the vlan tag would be another option.

Can Google wifi not just be set up as an access point, rather than a router?

The term is probably 'bridge mode' on the Google wifi settings.

yes, google wifi does support 'bridge mode' (access point mode) - only limit is it only works with a single g-wifi (no meshing possible)

Hi, no Google have not sorted this as yet, not sure if its on Google list of things to fix, in the meantime if you were to also need a switch at the same location as the Google Wifi router you could invest in a managed one and get it too drop the vlan for you, the same switch could also be used to supply lan side ports for you

Did you end up trying to Bridge a port on the Orcon Router?

Yeah I did but it didn’t work and now I can’t access the actual router because it just doesn’t appear. I don’t have a device with Ethernet on it so I cannot connect that way and don’t know what to do know.

Can you just enable DMZ? Or port forward all ports lol. Should do the trick

Hi, purhaps tell us about the layout (physically re rooms and ONT location) then you might consider adding a switch to the mix, technically you could use the Orcon router if you could get it to bridge as MistenFuru mentions, but that is a messy solution.

Other solution is to get a cheap managed switch, configure that such that one port connects to the ONT, the other to the Google Wiif, and set the ONT port for vlan10 tagged and the other to vlan10 access, the other spare ports of the switch could be used for distributing the lan, a couple of cheap switches are below, ones a five port the other eight.

There are two aspects, one is double natting outbound traffic, the other is having to port foward twice, in reality in a small residential setup, probably not a big issue or negative from a technical point of view, but messy from a logistics of having a non required router stuck in the mix.
