I have an existing LAN setup that works great - and my routers do nearly everything I need them to do... with one exception - and I have no idea if any other router can do what I would like.

So here I am asking my (hopefully not too stupid) question:

Are there any routers on the market now that will allow a wifi password change ***without*** a router restart?

(or routers from the last few years, I'm not in need of 'cutting-edge' stuff)

I know that there might not be such a thing, but it can't hurt to ask in a tech forum where people will just *know* the answer.

I haven't come across any that require a restart to change the wifi password. What make/models are you running? Can any run OpenWRT?

No wifi router should require a reset to change wifi passwords.

Unless you are talking about device admin password etc.

rhy7s - Mine are both Apple AirPort Extremes (please don't hate me)

zyo - Mine do! It takes the whole LAN down for a while as it does.

Main issue for me is that I want the CAT6 stuff to stay "UP" while the wifi network does whatever it has to to change the password. But in my particular device setup the whole thing goes dark for a bit...

So am entertaining the idea of replacing one of the AirPort ones with a non-apple one.

So really? Are ALL Linksys/etc wifi routers able to change wifi passwords on the go?

No other brand would require kicking users off LAN just to update wifi passwords.

If you want good WiFi then go with a dedicated access point (i.e. ubiquiti) and use your airport just for lan.

Can you just have a separate router for ethernet. And a Wifi only access point for your wifi? Have a look at the Ubiquity Edge router Lite, for an Ethernet only router. Assuming that you have UFB.

Every other router can do what you need.

What your experiencing is an apple quirk.

Do you already have an ISP supplied router? If so, under the network tab in the Airport device settings, change to Bridge mode instead of Router to use them as APs.
