I had a wireless connection; then it vanished. I'd like it back. Here's what happened.
I recently bought a Linksys ADSL Gateway to set up a wireless home network using my iMac and Dell laptop. I plugged in the gateway, and organised an account with Xnet. The setup wizard on the disc that came with the modem didn't autoload on my iMac, so I just filled in the necessary info on the Gateway setup browser page and successfully set up a connection on my iMac using Airport. Internet, email, etc etc all worked fine. All good.
About two weeks later I went to do the same on my Dell laptop. I inserted the setup disc that came with the modem, launched the setup wizard, got about 2/3 of the way through the process and an error message told me the laptop could not be connected to the internet. At exactly the same time my wife yelled out from the spare room that the internet connection on the iMac had dropped out. The internet light on the Gateway turned red. I turned off/on the Gateway. This time the only lights to come on were the power and wireless lights, not the DSL or Internet lights.
Thus it has been for over a week. I have spent hours on the phone to Xnet to sort this out, and they've been no help at all. I have all the correct info input into the Gateway setup page for it to locate the Gateway. I have reset the Gateway, numerous times. I have tested the phone jack; it's working fine. I have unplugged phones. I don't have a monitored alarm. I had Telecom do a port reset. An engineer has come out to my home, plugged his modem into my wall jack, told me the line's fine and it's my modem that's the problem and then charge me $81. Finally, yesterday I got a new modem - same variety, Linksys Gateway. Plugged it in; still nothing.
I'm perplexed. The fact the DSL light won't come on is rather worrying. But I can't help but feel this is not a hardware problem; that the problem lies in what happened when I went through the setup wizard on my laptop. During my roundabout methods to fix this gigantic mess, occasionally an error message has popped up on the laptop saying there's an IP address conflict with another computer on the network, which I take to mean my iMac. I sort of know what this means, but I have no idea how to fix it.
Any takers?
