Hello all,

just a quick easy to answer question.

I just got call from a Slinghsot person who tried to get me to switch to them for Internet and possibly electricity / mobile.

Their internet UFB offer includes a "modem". I'm currently with Big Pipe and when UFB got installed at my home by Chorus, the installed a white box inside the house (ONT I beleive) which I connect with my router by means of ethernet cable. There is no "modem" involved.

Any idea what they mean by "modem"?

They mean a router. The person at the other end is either dumbing it down, or doesn't know the difference.

They simply mean the router. You're best to keep your electricity / broadband separate and to be perfectly honest I wouldn't touch Slingshot based from experience.

You can save more money by comparing your power provider on https://www.powerswitch.org.nz/ and sticking with a broadband provider that works well for you. Be wary of some deals on Powerswitch however like Electric Kiwi who are only cheapest if you shift the bulk of your power use to their hour of free power. Also, don't get sucked in to power providers from people who are offering to give you $50 credit as they get a kickback and are essentially turning into the power companies salespeople.

Thanks Michael, I was happy with slingshot once, and only moved to Big Pipe because I got frustrated by problems with my ADSL which stemmed from the fact that I lived 2 kilometers away from the nearest exchange - you were the one who helped me find out. BigPipe did not help a bit with that, which is obvious now but I did not know that back then. If they (slingshot) provided a good deal, I would consider switching, but their deal is 84$ against 79$ at big pipe for the same naked 100/20, so it does not seem to make sense.

Bear in mind that a 'bad' ISP is going to be more noticeable on a fibre connection, since any problems are now most likely going to be at the ISP end, not with your individual connection.
