Hey folks,

A new router arrived from 2degrees today to solve some on-going network issues.

After spending a day or so researching the compatibility of the previous router with a PiHole, I concluded that it wasn't possible and didn't go ahead with trying to set it up.

So, does anyone have any experience/knowledge on whether or not the FRITZ!Box 7590 would work with a PiHole?

Yes it's compatible. I am using a 7490 with a PiHole.
You simply just need to change the DNS server which is handed out by DHCP to the pihole.

This setting is change under "Home Network > Network > Network Settings > IP Addresses" note you will need to be close to the router when you change this as it needs you to press a button on it to confirm the change.

Ah, excellent! Thank you for the swift reply. I'll pencil in some time on the weekend to give it a crack.

The final straw was YouTube asking me yesterday: 'Do you want to see 3 Ads now at the start, or throughout the video?'...

Here's hoping for the addition of option 3: no ads ✓

However you said "some on-going network issues." - I wouldnt be worrying about the Pi until youve got those issues resolved.

Or is using the PiHole the issue ? (and if so, you were lucky the ISP sent another router to try)

I use the 7590 with Pi Hole, it works fine.

You can't delegate DNS for IPv6 using the Fritzbox 7590. I took a different approach, I disabled the 7590 built in DHCP and used DCHP from the Pi Hole, which works perfectly. DHCP on the Pi Hole hands out DNS including IPv4 and IPv6 as Pi Hole. I have Pi Hole using ISP DNS upstream.

Sorry, to be clear, the new router solved the issues. Apparently the old one just crapped out.

PiHole does not block YouTube ads. It never has, never will. The ads are served up by YouTube itself so blocking on DNS level will actually break all video playback.

Also remember sites like Geekzone use ads, donations and subscriptions to survive. By blanket blocking all sites you're basically freeloading on such sites. If you continue to use Geekzone then consider a subscription and also consider subscribing to YouTube Premium to support the creators of the videos you watch.

I do use PiHole as more a privacy tool but also give to content creators to do my part as with PiHole you can't simply whitelist any sites.

I'm going to give this script a shot and see what gives.

You're bang on about supporting content creators and such - I try and do so where possible.
