Hi,

I have been invited to a friend's Plex server, but it does not connect on my Smart TV. I can confirm that it works fine on my laptop.

We tried some troubleshooting like disabling secure connection on the plex server or re-inviting me to join etc. But nothing worked.

I just now unplugged my TV from the Ethernet cable, connected it to Wifi and it worked without a hitch! Can confirm that hardware is fine, as other streaming services work fine on that cable.

I have a Fritz!Box 7560 - wondering what I am looking for in the router that is going to fix this issue for me?

I have limited network knowledge, so please keep it simple for me guys. I know my way around my router, but have zero skills in VPNs or Firewall Forwards or Rules etc.

Is your TV Ethernet cable plugged directly into the router?

Because I cant think of any reason it would work over Wifi and not a LAN cable. Unless you have some subnets set up and route rules are wrong. But then you'd have all kinds of Internet issues from your TV. Do other services work when using a LAN like Netflix, Youtube or just web browsing?

All other services on the TV are working fine.

The Ethernet is plugged into a powerline adapter - could that have been causing the issues? I dont understand why other services would be fine, but Plex be impacted?

Plug tv direct into router to eliminate the powerline as the cause.

Is your TV using DHCP or a static IP on the ethernet adaptor?

Also you say web app. Do you mean you're using the browser on the TV? Or have you downloaded the actual Plex app from your TVs app store?

Plugging directly into router is not an option at this stage - there is no option for cable getting from one side of house to other (working on this - need someone small to run cable thru ceiling cavity)

Is the TV likely to determine whether it's using DHCP or Static - or is my router deciding this? There is no networking settings on the TV that I can see which would relate to this.

Regarding Web App - sorry poor choice of words - I mean the Plex app installed on the TV.

The router is probably assigning DHCP addresses if required. However; it is the device (TV in this case) that puts out a DHCP request or uses static settings. There will be some settings somewhere to change or set this up. If you havent changed anything its highly likely its using DHCP. This should be fine. Often problems come from static settings that do not match what is required for the router.

To be honest I suspect its the Powerline adaptors. These can be a bit hit and miss.

I suspect DHCP/Static issue as above, if not the powerline. Only way to check is get a long Ethernet. Or reset your tv network settings.

That said I use Plex on my TV over wifi. Works fine for all my content up to quite beefy 4k files.

Just as a follow-on from that, I discovered only recently that there is actually a Plex app (64 bit only) for Windows available on the Plex web site. Works rather better than a web browser I've found. Be worth running a test with that.
