If I plug my NAS into the router using ethernet cable, can I access the NAS via wifi on the network or must the computer have an ethernet cable connection as well?

In 99% of cases yes.... in the 1% some routers block communications between wired ethernet and wifi but this is exceptionally rare

Should be fine, as in theory they'll be on the same subnet etc.

I like to park my NAS box that has the PC backups a goodly distance away from the PC so, in the event of a fire, one of them may survive!

In my previous house it was up a floor and on the opposite side of the house and given we were pretty close to the fire station I reckoned my idea would probably have worked.

Not so much now, though. Only on opposite sides of the house. Still, there is no downside so why not.

Edit:- Also, being somewhat smaller it is easier to hide a NAS so that may mean a burglar might miss it!
