Howdy.

Have given my sister a DLink Wireless ADSL Router for Christmas, so niece and nephew can surf the web and so can she via Wireless (WEP Encrypted) on her laptop.

Set it up here with the Niece and Nephews computer (Running Windows XP Home). That computer is hard-wired and working fine.
Set up sisters laptop here (running Windows Vista Basic) and connects fine to the Wi-Fi. No internet access shown here which was to be expected as I don't have ADSL here.

My sister has set up the router in Wanganui and it is working fine for the desktop, which has internet and all is well.

The laptop however, is connected to the wi-fi but there is no internet (I suspect, as seen here it is showing 'limited connectivity' on the little diagram under Control Panel->Network connections.

I have no knowledge of Vista, made more difficult as my sister is in Wanganui and I'm in Wellington, so was hoping someone may have some suggestions on what we can try?

it needs to be configured to log onto her isp. i assume that step's been successfully accomplished?

if not go to a web browser and type in 10.1.1.1
user = admin password = admin if it hasnt been changed
within those 4 walls you can then key in your isp user name and password.
some isps have a configuration cd to do that.

Er.. if you read above, thats been done. The desktop is surfing the web fine. It's the laptop running Vista that has the issue.
The vista laptop works fine via cabled.. but on wireless has 'unidentified network' and 'limited connectivity'.

erm ... apologies! brain failure.

ok so we are assuming she is connected to the router's wireless and saying unidentified network. 3 potentials
1) router misbehaving. has the wireless been configured on the router? has she given it a name so you can know the laptop's definitely hooked on to the correct wifi.

2) she's not connected the laptop to the correct wifi.

3) the laptop not behaving. this can either be hardware (drivers) or software (vista basic)
try vista. go to start menu and type services.
make sure all services starting with IP and Network are started.
make sure WLAN autoconfig is started.

if all started then i'd start looking at 1) before tweaking with drivers as it can make it worse. if playing with drivers make sure you create a restore point first. however if the laptop has not been tampered with i wonder if the drivers have anything to do with it ... what brand's the laptop?

also i assume she has rebooted with router yes? unplug for 1 whole minute and repower and see what happens.

We know the wif-fi and router is configured correctly as another laptop (running Windows XP home) was able to connect to it.

It was confirmed last night that she is connected to the correct WiFi (the correct SID is showing)

The router was powered down as it was taken from Wellington to Wanganui.

I've been reading forums online last night and it appears this is affecting a lot of people around the world. There doesn't seem to be any 'fix'...

Once again, wired works fine.. It is only wireless which won't work with Vista.. It works fine with another laptop running XP.

what's the laptop brand, model and age? what's its wireless chipset (and did she connect via vista wireless or is there a 3rd party wireless application - usually it only works if connecting via the 3rd party wireless app - however in those cases it wouldnt connect to the wireless at all- yours is connected but no internet)? has she checked the services above?

in theory there's always a fix. but way easier to have the laptop in front of the wannabe fixer :p

the other thing to try which is often the culprit:

go to network and sharing center (note i am doing it from vista ultimate there may be slight differences)
click on manage network connections
right click on the wireless network and go to properties
there is a list of things.
click on all the properties of each thing and make sure everything is set to "acquire automatically".

if one of them is not you will not get internet. if they're all set to automatic then ... i'm sorry that's my limit.

It's a brand new Acer Laptop.. only about 3 weeks old.. Unsure of the model. Heard back from D-Link whom are suggesting the pass-key is incorrect. Strange as I would assume from that the Laptop wouldn't even connect to the router (I know it connected as I copied documents from the desktop to the laptop while both machines were here on the weekend.

They do say to use WPA... so I wonder if its a Vista thing with WEP and Wireless?

Interesting.. I always thought WEP was better than WPA.. but reading on wikipedia it says the WPA superseeded WEP as WEP is easily cracked. I learn something new everyday! I must go change my own wireless now! :)

If its using WEP then it will still show connected even with the wrong key.

Also, if its called DLINK or whatever it may be connecting to the neighbors one with a wrong key so not working.

I can see 3 WPA protected default SSID's from home and that must confuse some people.
