Hello,

We have a Huawei HG659 modem (default modem supplied to us by Vodafone when we went fibre.

We have purchased a ASUS RT-AX86U Wi-Fi 6 Gigabit Gaming Router.

I have plugged the Asus router into the Huawei modem, and I am guessing that I need to turn off the routing capacity of the Huawei modem, as when I connect to the Wifi, I get both options. I am guessing that I need to use the modem as a modem only.

I have had a look around on the Vodafone Gateway, but I can't see anywhere to do that.

Could someone please let us know if we are trying to do this right, and not offer the right solution?

NEWBIE ALERT - we don't know much. My husband is freaking out that we have bought a lemon - when really we need some education (last night he was arguing that the Optical Network Terminal was the modem, if you catch my drift). So please if you can, speak in plain language.

Any help gratefully received.

ONT is the modem. It could make sense to ditch the Huawei and configure the WAN on the ASUS (a router) appropriately and connect directly to ONT. I'm not claiming that the ASUS is a better router.

The Asus would replace the existing Huawei. Both are routers. The modem part of the Huawei would only be used on an ADSL / VDSL (i.e. copper) connection, not on fibre.

Stepping back though, what are you trying to achieve by swapping out the Huawei?

Dont think you bought a lemon. I'm considering one myself as an upgrade to what I have.

Anyway... PBTech have a good write up on how to set up modems for fibre in NZ: https://www.pbtech.co.nz/ASUSISPSettings#VDFAC68U

As others have said... remove the Huawei and just use the ASUS router into the ONT. Set it up as per instructions from PBTech and you should be good to go.

That Asus is a great router. As suggested connect it directly to the ONT

Do you have landline service through Vodafone (or who ever your ISP is)? As this will make swapping the router more complicated. Also beware if your are on a fast "gigabit" plan, then not all third part routers can handle full speed.
