I have a Siemens s56 mobile phone with bletooth compatability. I have seen the syncstation which allows you to connect your phone and your PC, and I also have seen the wireless USB connection dangle to connect as well. My question comes down to file transfer between components. I have pictures and ringtones/midi/mmf files I would like to have on my phone, that are on my PC. Is it possible to have file transfer between PC and Mobile Phone with bluetooth or do I have to use the syncstation?

You can use Bluetooth to transfer files. The S56 is similar to the S55, so have a look in our S55 review.

I have an S56, and unlike the S55, it does not provide the File Transfer service (it provides everything else the S55 does, and adds OBEX Push). This is a big disappointment. It's strange, since you can easily send files from the S56 to the PC via Bluetooth.

I'm a Bluetooth newbie though, so I'm still figuring things out.

I've noticed that some phones will not have File Transfer, but if you drag and drop a file to the mobile phone icon in My Bluetooth Places, the file is transferred via Object Push and will sit in your SMS inbox (or Beam Inbox in some models). Have you tried this?

Also, just right-click a file and select Send to and choose Bluetooth...

Awesome! Yes, both of these work with the S56 -- dropping a file on the phone's icon, and the Send To context menu.

Thanks for the tip!

I recently purchased a Siemens s56 (here in the US) and got it working with a USB Bluetooth Dongle. As promised, everything in bluetooth worked great ... except:

1. I cannot seem to transfer files from the PHONE (s56) back to the PC.
This is because the File Transfer service isn't 'directly supported' by the phone?
Note that I can still transfer files from the PC to the PHONE via the context
sensitive RTCLICK menu in explorer, desktop, etc.

2. Also note that there are restrictions to the sizes of the MID and MMF files
that are transferred to the phone. By restrictions, I mean the files can be
copied okay but they cannot be 'PLAYed'.

3. Occasionally, the file transfer between the PC and the PHONE hangs
Maybe a handshaking problem or something. You can wait a while and
CANCEL the transfer. Sometimes you have to wait longer.

Okay ... now the praises:

1. The WIDCOMM software usually bundled with your bluetooth dongle works great on XP.

2. I was able to get the Outlook Synchronization stuff to work seamlessly.
You can either synchronize ALL files or you can add individual address book
entries from OUTLOOK to your PHONE's address book. I couldn't find a way
to add individual entries from the PHONE to OUTLOOK. Again, this seems to
be related to the earlier restriction mentioned in 1 above.

Most of my worries would be washed away if the s56 would support some sort of low-level 'File Transfer Service' where I could see the entire PHONE's file system as perhaps a virtual drive that I could navigate and edit via Windows Explorer on my PC.

You guys at Siemens ... are you listening? Or if I have missed this somewhere in the missing documentation for bluetooth connectivity w.r.t. the S56, please let me know how I can do this.
