Hello.

In my past week my previous router (a Dynalink RTA1320) died. It slowly started to drop connections and in the end it was dropping them every few minutes, making it near unusable. It was a great little thing while it lasted thought.

Anyway, I ended up buying a DSE XH9949 to replace it. The good news it that the device is very similar (same chipset) to the previous router, but I'm unable to set it up in half-bridge mode like my previous setup.

I've been using a TP-LINK TL-WR642G as the end of the bridge and which my computers/devices are connected to.

When I try to simply enable to half-bridge, the AP (the TL-WR624G) can see my assigned IP from my ISP, but in the traffic selection of the WebUI, nothing is being receivied. It is sending thought.

I've tried taking the AP out of the equaltion by enabling half-bridge and connecting the router directly to my PC, which worked. Although for some reason in Windows, the connection keeps reconnecting, but when I tried Ubuntu Linux, the connection was stable and ran fine. Checking the logs (in both OSs), there was a lot a lines about the DHCP assigment. When the router is in half-bridge mode, there isn't any avaible options about DHCP in the router, so I presume these are from the ISP. Correct me if I'm wrong.

When the AP is connected to the router, I cannot access the router, so checking its log is out of the question. The logs of the AP doesn't give me any useful infomation either.

So now I'm all out of ideas. If anyone has any ideas on how I can fix this, they'll be much apperiated.

Thanks.

Rather than half bridge mode, setup the DSE as the main router. Plug the feed into one of the LAN ports (not the WAN) of the TP. Turn off DCHP on the TP, so therefore it acts as a "dumb" access point. All devices on your network will then talk direct to the DSE.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't this give a slight performance loss in comparison to have it setup in half-bridge mode (since the router becomes transparent to the rest of the network)?

The chief reason for using half bridge is that usually your wireless router has much better software/firmware for QoS, monitoring, access control, vpn etc etc.  If the new modem has decent features you may want to go with coffeebaron's suggestion.  However if it doesn't it's much better to get half bridge working.

If you can't get the DSE working in half bridge mode I would just take it back and get another RTA1320 off trademe, ~$25 for a as new unused one.

No, if anything there would be a performance gain - as there would just be one device doing all the work. With a router in half-bridge, it appears transparent, but is actually pulling a few tricks to make the half-bridge thing all happen.

Thanks. That setup you suggested is working. However the firmware for the DSE doesn't seem to be as good as the RTA1320. While it does contain a few things that the RTA1320 doesn't have (SNMP), it is also lacking a few things too. Primany, there's no MAC address IP reservation which is useful when it comes to port forwarding.

Oh well, those are minor problems and are easy enough to fix. Thanks again for your help.
