I have recently been given a MS Bluetooth Intellimouse by a friend and this was tested on his Sony laptop as working fine. However, I have tried to connect it to my Toshiba 5100-201 laptop that has inbuilt BT (win XP Home) but no luck.

I do not have any software CD for the mouse or any receiver unit - it is just the mouse on its own.

Any possibilities of connecting it to my laptop ? The lappy detects the mouse in the device discovery section but nothing comes up on the service discovery section and hence the connect icon is greyed out. If i try another user mode, it asks for a passkey and i dont have one (leaving it blank does not work).

Any solutions ? Please help !!

It's probably because the Bluetooth version you have on your laptop does not support the HID profile. This is needed for devices like mouse and keyboard to work.

I know Toshiba has put out some Bluetooth updates (I have a Toshiba Tablet PC and the software supports HID). You'll have to look for it on Toshiba's website.

thanks a ton for the instant reply.

however, when i do click on the blank BT service window and then attempt to connect, it does come up with the connected icon but only briefly for a couple of seconds.

Anyway, i think your suggestion does make sense - i will check the toshiba website.

Perhaps the connect icon is just showing the Bluetooth connection for the Service Discovery activity? Yes, please check the Toshiba website, because there are a few updates there.

you were absolutely right - it does not support HID interface as confirmed on the toshiba website where it also states that there is no possibility of an upgrade on the older models. Sad ! But, if i was to purchase a normal BT USB stick, would it then allow me to connect the mouse ?

You can try it... I have Toshiba Tablet PC - no built-in Bluetooth, but it came with the Toshiba Bluetooth software.

I simply removed the software and installed another Bluetooth device. In your case you may want to simply disable the Toshiba software/hardware but not remove the software. Then you install the other Bluetooth software and plug the hardware. Being a laptop I'd recommend a PC card, because the USB dongle will be sticking out. Check my blog entry on this.

I'd recommend the TDK PC card, the Anycom PC card or the Bluetake BT100-S Plus. I think you'll find the TDK more easily in the UK.
