Hi GZ'ers,

This seemed like the closest forum for dealing with phone wiring questions - feel free to relocate it if required!

I have just purchased an HP M1120n MFP and need to connect it to my network.  The current solution of running a 15m cable accross the floor through the hall, kitchen, and dining room is being frowned upon from those who must be appeased!

The printer is located close to an existing phone outlet, so I have been looking into replacing the single BT outlet plate with a twin outlet plate giving me RJ45 and BT.

I'm fine with sorting out the RJ45/Ethernet wiring, but I'm not sure what to do about replacing the BT jack.  At present it is an HPM XL 770 BT/H 8529 and there are two cables connected.  The first cable is connected to 1 (blue) and 5 (blue+white), and the second cable to 2 (blue) and 4 (blue+white)...

My main concern is the capacitor - does this indicate that this is a master jack or will all of my outlets have one?  If I replace this with a PDL clip-in type unit does that usually include the capacitor? (I didn't notice one when I was looking at them in the shop).

Advice and/or ideas from anyone familiar with these sorts of connectors would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
Andy.

Older 2 wire jacks all had a capacitor to cater to older telephones designed for 3 wiring without having to have the 3rd wire connected. The latest PDL modules don't have the capacitor because almost all newish phones don't need a capacitor in the jack.

The 2 wire jack daisy chains with a seperate Khrone connector for each leg of the pair, the PDL has 1 Khrone strip divided in the middle 2xA leg & 2xB leg

Just to confirm... so I should be fine with connecting the existing two wire setup to the PDL jack (617M2) as long as I use the same layout?

Yep all will be good, on the PDL module there is a 4position/slot IDC Krone header. Its divided in two with the lefthand two connected together and the right hand two connected together an, its labled coloured wire and white wire, put the blue wire from each cable into an IDC slot on the coloured set and the white/blue wire from each cable into a slot on the white half, this will loop the line through. Hope that makes sense.

Cheers Cyril - I've got the PDL 671M2 BT module in front of me now, and what you descibe makes perfect sense.

Wish me luck! Smile

Aaaaaaaaand we're done!

Much better, although the shiny new white faceplate looks a bit odd next to the ten year old yellowed one.  I even have the correct flashing lights and dial tones - bonus!

Now I just need to swap out the "15m CAT6 UTP CABLE" for something more sensible.

Thanks everyone Cool
