I have been trying unsuccessfully to get my 4150 to connect to the Internet via BT through the K700i mobile phone. Vodaphone were quite helpful in setting up the account and then sent me HP BT driver downloads that were supposed to sort out the problem with the K700i phone but these downloads did not open successfully. They then suggested trying SE and/or HP. SE were not interested in anything to do with Microsoft and HP replied pointing me to a link to Geekzone - I could not see any topic that seemed to resemble my problem. Can anyone advise me?

All those new Sony Ericsson mobile phones require a reset command before connections. ATZ is the standard reset command for modems. Since the Windows Mobile Connection Manager already sends the AT you only need Z; plus whatever connection string you have to use.

Check this thread with instructions to connecting a Pocket PC to Sony Ericsson k700i. Check the posts on 9-OCT-2004 09:46 and 14-OCT-2004 02:32 because they contain all the information you need.

Really worries me Sony Ericsson not giving any support - they've changed something, since this was working without the reset on previous models.

Hello rdinwoodie. I think we have the same problem. I could connect my hx4705 to the internet using the IR port on my K700i but I could not connect using the bluetooth dial up modem. I sent email to HP tech support and they pointed me to Geekzone. Thanks for your advice Freitasm. I'll check it out.

Hello rdinwoodie, I tried adding "Z;" on the existing initialization string of my hx4705 and I was able to connect on the internet through the K700i's bluetooth modem. Just make sure that you have the correct GPRS settings of your operator on the K700i. Again many thanks for the advice freitasm.

Using the advice given and some help from Vodafone tech support I have managed to get a connection to work through the SE mobile using dial no. *99# and putting Z into the second string dial.
I am now faced with a new problem in that the internet explorer flag waves forever and I get "the page you are looking for cannot be found" or "the answering modem has disconnected" (not surprising after 10 minutes!
Can anyone help?

You can download VxUtil for free and install on your Pocket PC. Use it to PING a known site, like www.wired.com. If the PING works ok, then we know your connection is fine.

If the connection is fine then next step would be trying recreating a set of configuration files used by Pocket Internet Explorer that could've been deleted by mistake. Execute the program \windows\welcome.exe (on your Pocket PC open File Explorer, browse to \windows and tap on the file to execute it).

If the ping doesn't work, you also have to check that this connection is indeed using an Internet gateway, and not a WAP gateway. If you're not using an Init String on your Pocket PC, then you'll need one. Check this site for a series of GPRS configurations for European providers.

The Init String is entered on your Pocket PC, in the Connection Configuration, Advanced button. It will be in the +CGDCONT=1,,"internet" format, where internet will be replaced with the APN in use by your network. If you're using Z, enter Z;+CGDCONT=1,,"internet".

Freitasm - thanks for your patience with this. Today my device is not behaving the same way it did last Friday. I tried adding in the additional string after the Z but this just stopped the connection taking place with the phone. Later in the day I tried the PING test but this came up as a total failure - 5 tests and 0 successes. This was not surprising because by this time my phone connection to the internet was not working as it did. If I try to contact the internet it comes back "page could not be found". If I force a connection via the PDA by tapping on the dial-up networking icon it then allows a connection to be made but this cuts itself off automatically after ~ 3 seconds. It did not do this on Friday so perhaps the PING test might have worked then?

On the init string check that you should be using "internet" or other APN name. In New Zealand it's "internet" for non-NAT addresses or "www.vodafone.net.nz" for all other Internet access.

Also, make sure your account is enabled to access GPRS. I'm running out of options to suggest...

I reset my phone at the weekend and went back to Vodafone to get my account set up again. In the first string I have *99# and in the second string Z+cgdcont=3,"IP","internet", and this now gets the phone connected apparently to the internet (globe icon appears on the phone toolbar). The Internet Explorer flag on the iPAQ waves away for several minutes and eventually comes back with "the page you are looking for cannot be found". Any thoughts?

Try Z;+cgdcont=3,"IP","internet" (not the ; after Z).

Also, on your Pocket PC, open File Explorer, browse to \Windows and tap the program welcome.exe to execute it. Soft reset the device after this and try again, with the new string.

These two actions have not had any effect. Can you comment on the following issues?
1) When I go into Settings>Connections>Advanced>Network Card the window has "Work" in it. The only other option is "Internet" but if I change it to this it is always back at "Work" again if I go back and check??
2) If I select ActiveSync on the iPAQ underneath "Synchronise with Server" it says "Errors 3/8/05 1.09pm" Tapping on the errors comes up with the message - "The connection failed due to missing server informationor user credentials. Tap Options, and then the Server tab to verify that your server name is correct. The tap Options to verify that your user credentials are correct and try again - Error code: DEV_9"
On the ActiveSync page there is a Tools button that has either Options or Connect via IR. Selecting Options>Server shows BTInternet and the box titled "This server uses an SSL connection" is ticked - is this correct? The log-on credentials are correct for the BTInternet.

Is any of this relevant?

The ActiveSync server option you refer to is only used when synchronising to a Microsoft Exchange Server, and it is not used for connection management.

I think that your account don't have GPRS setup in it (not the phone, but the network settings that control your access to this service).

You have lost me here - what network settings are you referring to? What account? Who should I be speaking to to get the GPRS setup working properly?

GPRS is a service on GSM networks. In general it's setup by default - but things happen, and it may not be active in one account or another. Contact Vodafone and ask if this is ok in your account.

OK I'll contact Vodafone again today. One other related issue is that I downloaded a programme called Vodafone Connect Me from their website as it says that this should improve performance with GPRS to PDA's. This does not appear to be functioning properly. Having determined to try and download it again I uninstalled it on my PC but when I try to use the Add/Remove Programmes on my iPAQ it refuses to be removed. Should I do a hard reset to get rid of this? Do you have any knowledge of this Vodafone Connect Me programme?
