Hi team,

I want to know if anyone has any recommendations for USB dongles, or if it even matters. I have inbuilt BlueTooth on the Vaio which displays as Microsoft and a dongle at work that displays as WIDCOMM is there any important difference?

If there are any recommendations, please recommend a retailer in Auckland (New Zealand).

Are you looking for adapters for other computers or to replace the ones you already have? Most are pretty much the same, really. The ones from DSE will work just fine...

The Microsoft and Widcomm software provide different profiles - the Widcomm supports more profiles, but it has to be the one distributed with your device. They use a licensing file that is tailored to each individual model.

This is for a new machine to sync between my Nokia 6230 and a work laptop. I have used a DSE one for another office Desktop (Widcomm) and it seems to work fine, maybe stick to the DSE ones? I was thinking of taking the one from the desktop (small 10m one) and using it in the laptop and buy the 100m one (with a little aerial) for the desktop. I assume that means I would have to uninstall the existing software and install the software supplied with the new dongle?

Yes, you will have to uninstall the software and reinstall it. If you go this way, make sure you reboot in every step - very bad software I say...

saw an article on net a while ago, dude opened his aerial BT dongle to find the aerial was plastic only, and not physically connected to the electronics - just sitting there doing five eighths of palookaville.

I have purchased a new DSE dongle, and sadly the swap has failed. I uninstalled the existing BlueTooth software (re-booted), installed the new drivers (re-booted) and now I have a license issue. Has anyone fixed this problem before?

Arghhh. Probably looking at the wrong .inf files, or wrong drivers (using the old ones?)... Perhaps you can try to manually change the drives for the USB device and then look for the drivers on the CD?

You may have to unzip the files to a temporary folder.

Uninstalling and re-installing the second time worked. I now notice that the Bluetooth icon is green when connected (it used to be light blue) is there any importance to this of just a graphical difference in the software?

The green icon when in use is a good sign... It's just a different indicator, but it certainly shows an active connection!
