I have a Ipaq 1940 and a desktop running XP with a USB bluetooth dongle that i brought at Dick Smith.

I cannot get my Ipaq to share my internet connection via bluetooth. I go throught all the steps in the bluetooth manager but all I get when I try to connect is the following

Connection failed

unable to intiate bluetooth connection (error code: 0x81000196).

Can anyone tell me whats wrong?

Similar issue with me. Using a laptop (OS is XP) with a Dick Smith USB dongle and an iPAQ HP3875 (OS is Windows Mobile 2003). ActiveSync and File Sharing okay but can not get LAN connection to work for Internet connection. Have tried following M Freitas's BT Internet Sharing Guide (11/09/03) but that is for a PC using Win 2000 and most of the screens he shows (on the PC side of the setup) don't match the XP screens and options.

The Bluetooth Guide for connecting an iPAQ 5450 shows the Windows XP dialogs.

The problem is probably related to incorrect ICS settings.

sounds like com port conflicts ... did u check the SERIAL com port and make sure no one else use that same SERIAL port as bluetooth .. also try to reboot your system and syn again!

Last time I checked the DSE adapter was coming with Bluetooth drivers 1.2... They now have drivers 1.3 available on their site. A friend had to install them to have some features working.

Internet connection for me now resolved. Thanks to Mauricio and William for your input and advice (and the Heads Up on DSE BT Dongle Version 1.3 which I haven't got, but system okay anyway)

Solution in Win XP was to go to my Dial Up Adaptor (a G-Train PCMCIA card) and click on Sharing under ICS in there.

Martin, if you still haven't resolved your issue, please don't hestitate to contact me and I'll take you through the steps I used.

Hi, I'm new here, but have the same error trying to connect to Internet on my HP iPAQ 5550 via my Desktop Win XP Pro with Bluetooth CN-500 USB Adapter.

Following the above advices, I checked the Network connections and find following:

1. I suddenly appear to have a 4th connection, called Microsoft TV/Video-connection. Where did that come from, and has it anything to do with the just installed Bluetooth adapter, or can I safely remove it ? I don't need video out on my PC

2. A "Bleutooth connection has equally appeared, and it is not shared. When I enable sharing, it proposes to DISable my existing ICS (via the NIC that connects me to my girlfriends PC in the pther room, and by which she connects and shares one cable-modem with me) and to ENable the ICS vis Bluetooth.

Is there anyway to have both at the same time ?

Thanks a lot for any input - this is a great Mobile PC forum !

Don't worry about the TV NIC. Strange but won't do any harm.

You can only have ICS at any time. The ICS needs to be established from the NIC connected to the Internet to your new Bluetooth NIC. Since you already have one ICS define you can't define another one. You can go around this by creating a Bridge.

Let me get this correctly: by "bridge" do you mean hardware, or the "bridging" function I find in the context menu when I click on one of my Network Connections ?

Or otherwise put:

Right now I connect 2 PC's over one single cable-modem to the Net, with a little hub where the local NIC's of both pc's plug into.
Once I start to use by Bluetooth adapter, for enabling my iPAQ 5550 to go on the Net, I understand I cannot maintain my GF's PC's internet connection anymore ?

The thing is, the PDA is hers , and I'm only testing now to see if Bluetooth is an easyway for her to hook up to the net in a mobile way, using our cable modem ISP.
Does this mean, each time she wants to switch from Internet on her PC, to Internet on the iPAQ, she needs to reconfigure the ICS settings ?

I hope I read you right.

Yes, Bridge is the software functionality on Windows XP. Adding the Bluetooth iPAQ to your setup will not create any problem to your network - unless of course you have IP address conflicts. Since you already have ICS I believe these conflicts should not be a problem.

hi folks,
I am trying to make ICS work for me using BT billionton adapter on the desktop and imate running windows mobile 2003[I believe]. ActiveSync works fine. I have gone through the Bluetooth Guides and when it comes to starting Bluetooth Manager, I just can not see that item on my PDA under Settings! Is this an external application that I need to download or is my version of Windows mobile needs an update. Can some one tell me what could be wrong?

Salah, this should really be a new thread... Anyway, the i-mate Pocket PC does not have the Bluetooth software needed to access a shared Internet Connection. You can do it while the ActiveSync is connected though.
