So I'm going flatting this year and I have been googling around looking for a good setup. But I would like your guys opinions.
Im wanting to do data quota's and such.
So in your guys experience what do you think is the best modem and router (that can support gargoyle or the likes DD-WRT, Tomato etc ) that is easily available?

Depends how much you want to spend and whether you need wireless N and gigabit lan or are happy with wireless g and 100Mbit.

I am happily running Gargoyle on a Linksys WRT54GL v1.1 (you can use any old modem in front of it if you use a non-ADSL router).

I dont need wireless N and gigabit I can live with out. Budget is up in the air at the moment so like $200 tops?

DSE XH9949 or Linksys AM300 in half bridge mode + Asus RT-N16 running DD-WRT

pretty sure gargoyle isn't compatible with RT-N16 but you can always check.

Do whatever you want to do man.

The TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND offers similar features as the Asus but for about $50 less, might be worth considering. According to their wiki it will run DD-WRT but not sure about Gargoyle.

Hmm so currently I'm looking at a TP-LINK TD-8840 in half bridge with a TL-WR1043ND. The RT-N16 looks a bit pricey

Be careful flashing that TP-Link, from what I hear, they are rather easy to brick. The RT-N16 unfortunately is not supported by open-wrt, so Gargoyle is not currently supported. But works well with Tomato.

However, for what you are trying to do, such as data monitoring/quota's the two solutions I know of is either Gargoyle, or run a PC to do the DHCP, so it monitors all the internet traffic.

I'm currently running Gargoyle on an old Buffalo router, and am waiting for open-wrt support on the RT-N16.

If you intend to use Gargoyle (which is a front end for OpenWRT) double check the router you are buying is supported by OpenWRT.

DD-WRT and Tomato currently support a wider range of models (like the Asus RT mentioned) which OpenWRT doesn't yet.

As I mentioned on Tony's blog I bought a TP-Link WR741ND for $40 on Trademe and used the firmware image from the Gargoyle website. Installation was so easy, just select the .bin file from the TP-Link 'upgrade firmware' option on the web interface.

TP LINK TL-WR1043ND would be my pick for DD-WRT or Gargoyle/OpenWRT (but not for Tomato as is currently only supports broadcom chipsets).

It's ~$120 atm if you check gearbot.co.nz or pricespsy.co.nz

It has:
- It has full (300Mbit) wireless N support (unlike the WR741ND which is 150Mbit/s)
- Gigabit 4 port switch
- Atheros AR9132 @ 400mhz, 32MB ram, 8MB flash
