I know these discussions pop up quite regularly, but I have done a search on these forums and couldn't find anything that is discussing exactly what I am after.

I am setting up a home office for a mate of mine. I have just bought him a new laptop with Wireless N built in. I want to ensure he has a backup strategy in place so was thinking a good solution would be to buy a 1TB USB external hard drive and plug this into a wireless-N router with file sharing capabilities.

I can then setup some backup software to run on his laptop and automatically backup to the external hard drive every day. He is not all that computer literate so it needs to be silent, and automatic.

I know he should have a third copy, kept offsite, but it is baby steps for this guy!

So I need a router with ADSL, wireless-N, and USB file sharing (+ printer if possible) capabilities. I came across the HG556a which is supplied by Vodafone - it seems it has some limitations with the file sharing - is this a viable option?

Are there any other better options out there? Open to any suggestions.

Ok - so I think I will buy them a Draytek Vigor 120 as these seem to be one of the best ADSL modems on the market - and I can get them for under $100 from Ascent.

So that should open up the market a little bit in terms of only needing a router with Wireless-N + USB file sharing, i.e. no ADSL modem built in.

Came across the TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND which seems to do everything I need, for a reasonable price. I have a Netgear WNDR3700v2 which is close to the top end, but is probably a little expensive for what my mate needs.

Any other models I should be looking at?

I would also back the Extreme. Very flexible if you need to introduce additional wireless extension points.

For a backup solution I would suggest looking at something that connects via ethernet rather than USB. Generally you get better throughput using ethernet solutions compared to USB.

As you mentioned though, cost may be a sticking point.

A bit on the pricey side, but you could always go for a higher model DrayTek which has Wireless-N and USB filesharing built-in, such as the Vigor2710n.

Otherwise, I know the AirPort Extreme and Vigor120 work nicely together Smile

Yeah the Airport Extreme and that flash Draytek are a bit more expensive that he was hoping. I think that TPLINK one might be the way to go.

Just make sure that wireless speed isn't too much of a factor for them - I've heard that model's wireless isn't great once you aren't in the same room.

True, but it will be rock solid reliability that he (or you!) won't have to play with.

Ended up going with the Draytek and the TPLink. The modem is rock solid so if we starting having problems with the wireless/backup I should be able to convince him to upgrade!

Thanks for your help guys/gals.

Sweet! Remember to run the DrayTek in pass-through mode for maximum awesome (and avoidance of double NAT).

Yeah - I have the same modem myself (with a Netgear WNDR3700) so should be ok getting it up and running for my mate.

Thanks for your help.
