I have a Telecom New Zealand Thomson TG585v8 modem which I have enabled PPTP passthrough (port forwarding) on.

I am attempting to use a Vodafone New Zealand network connected Android phone is establish a PPTP connection through to Telecom NZ TG585 modem to establish a connection to a PPTP server on a router.

I just can't seem to establish a connection and thought it best to check if anyone knows of or has used PPTP over said networks, especially the Thomson TG585v8

On the LAN based router (Linksys E4200 running Tomato firmware) I see the port 1723 IP packets, but they are dropped.

At this point I'm just looking for assurance that PPTP and GRE protocol can be routed between Vodafone NZ and Telecom NZ via a Thomson TG585 modem with PPTP passthrough (port forwarding) enabled.

If I test the connection on my local LAN it all works with no problems.
Just seem to be having a problem establish the connection via a WAN.

Thanks in advance for any help or thoughts.

The Thomson TG585v8 is fine when port forwarding PPTP.

I have setup a PPTP server on a Windows 7 PC and used both a notebook and an Android phone to make a successful connection.

Just read your other thread too... was wondering is there a particular need for PPTP?

With the Thomson you can do something similar to half bridge (that Dynalink or TP Link models do), if I remember correctly it's an option called "assign ip address to device".

You might be able to avoid the double NAT this way.

Also you could use your router running Tomato for everything, there are Tomato builds with open vpn client/server included so no need to have another PC on to run the PPTP client/server.

Open VPN uses Open SSL for encryption and UDP or TCP for transmission so it just works and doesn't need special VPN pass through like PPTP which uses GRE.

I like the way you think, and yes you're so correct.

I already have OpenVPN on my Linksys E4200 Tomato 'router' and it works very well.

No problems with OpenVPN... Until I came to my Android mobile which only use PPTP or IPSec etc.
No CyanogenMod for the SE X10i as I write (28/10/2011)

I say 'router' as I'm currently running in 'gateway' mode on my E4200 and with the double NAT'ng and etc it's creating a problem with PPTP on the router. Again PPTP all works on the E4200 (with Tomato firmware and ipkg PPTP package download)

BUT just not via the WAN interface on the E4200. It works fine via the LAN side.

I've played with the iptables until I'm blue in the face, with no success.
I've reset the PPTP config to use the WAN port as a listening port, but the inbound PPTP packets just get dropped.

AS with the standard Linksys E4200 the WAN port is a bit like outbound traffic only and only inbound established connections thankyou very much.
This is reflected and documented in the Tomato firmware when using gateway mode.

May need to switch to routing mode and redo my whole WAN connection thing.

On another note the Thomson TG585v8 does port forward PPTP and GRE even has the option to enable GRE protocol 47 which is a bit of a treat. And from my testing the Thomson port forward of PPTP works will with no known (at this time) problems.

I just Doggedly keep vacillating on the Linksys E4200 WAN port in some vain hope I might find a most cunning plan that would let it work via double NAT'd connections.
