If anyone has the hardware in the subject line. HELP. 

The 8960N is a wireless modem router and the 1043ND is a wireless router.

I am having a problem connecting the two. I want to use the 1043ND as the router for all the wireless devices in the house, as once its set up, it will be installed somewhere central in the house and of course connected to ethernet.

The problem I am having is that when I go into the modem and disable  DHCP and Wireless as I want DHCP addresses to be served from the 1043, everything cuts out, even though DHCP and Wireless are enabled in the 1043. The modem and router are connected by ethernet.  

Am I missing something? Because its starting to bug me.

Will check back later for answers.

Bah Geekzone ate my first reply!

You still need DHCP enabled on the 8960N so that it can give the WAN port of the 1043ND an IP address (as well as DNS and gateway info).
DHCP also needs to be enabled on the 1043ND so that it can give IPs etc to the hosts connecting over WiFi .. just make sure you use a different subnet (say 10.1.1.x on the 1043ND and 192.168.1.x) on the 8960N.

I have done the same thing with a 1043ND and a DSL-526B, if your ISP lets you connect using PPPoE then its easy, set your modem/router to bridged mode and get the 1043ND to do the connection.

If you have to use PPPoA then there are problems. If your Modem/router can do Half-bridge then try that.
Also if you dont mind complely bypasing the 1043ND take a look at this Link

Assuming you have a DSL connection that uses PPPoA (most people in NZ except some LLU connections)...

If I remember correctly the TP Link W8960N has ip extension (aka half bridge) so it's just a matter of setting it up like this:

Well I have followed all the suggestions above. Disabled wireless, but left DHCP enabled on the modem and the router. Changed IP address of the router to 10.0.0.1. Left the modem at 192.168.1.1

Did the IP extension thing, but still not working.

Router is working now, after much hair pulling, but still have one issue. When I connect a USB drive to the 1043ND and go into settings and start the FTP server. The connection goes dead.  Any idea why?

Sounds like a bug, make sure the WR1043ND is running the latest firmware as TP Link are pretty good on fixing bugs with firmware updates

+1. Also don't expect any great performance out of the usb drive over your network. It's SLOOOOOOWW on mine, with the original firmware or DD-WRT. Still fine for backups etc but not flash at all if you want to stream off it.

Checked the firmware, its running the latest version. One thing is though, its showing an internal ip address for the internet address in the FTP settings. example 192.168.1.XXX

Is that correct or should it be showing the default gateway address from the modem? i.e. 202.xxx.xxx.xxx

If that makes sense

I tend to remove _ALL_ reference to 192.168.0.0/16.

Then all you need is to have your DSL interface routed to your LAN (10.0.0.0/8, 172.16.0.0/12).

As you have done, I'd use 10.0.0.0 for all your LAN based needs.  And as such there should be no 192.168.0.0 addresses which are active in your network.

Not knowing the devices in question, but if it's a USB hanging off a router, I thought it'd use the Routers LAN address.

Are you attempting to allow FTP access from Public IP addresses on the Internet?

If this was the case I'd have the USB FTP in a separate DMZ network, otherwise, the USB FTP on the router should be using existing LAN based IP addresses. 

This is just my guess.
