Mines a bit of a work in progress again at the moment, but this is 99.9% correct:

The 10/100 16 port switch is the 'core of the network, and lives in a cupboard in our wash house with the adsl modem, ATA's and a small UPS:

The 'Servers' live under a bench in my 'workshop' (old sleepout). I used to run five separate boxes, but now just the PABX (left) and the single debian based server that uses linux vserver to support some virtual stuff. I don't have any windows based servers now so have dropped vmware from the mix:

Last but certainly not least is the farthest reach of the network out in the garage, which is an Alix SBC running Voyage linux which talks to a simple PLC that monitors the charge state of my solar PV setup. The solar setup currently runs the firewall, the Alix in the picture (Small silver box) and the 10/100 16 port switch. By the end of 2011 I intend to have the whole LAN off grid. Not to save power you understand, just because I can. :-). Current progress is around replacing the unstable RS232 based RTU in the picture with a more reliable modbus PLC/RTU setup.

And... What's the tool that's giving folks the really cool LAN diagram icons? I've not seen those ones before..

It'd be even better if I could keep it working for more than a day or two... :-) (hence replacing it with different process control setup)

Mine is very simple actually, so don't even have to draw up a fancy diagram:

Dlink 502T --> Juniper J2320 (for IPv6 + messing around with) --> Linksys WRT54GL + Old laptop running Debian Linux (media server)

Then that flicks over Wireless to my laptop, and my flatmates laptop.

Couldn't get any more simpler :P

In the diagram above, DHCP in the DMZ is provided by the aDSL router, in the Windows Domain it is provided by the DC, but I have nothing for the games network apart from serving it off one of the workstations, which is very eligant.

You need a router that will allow you to do DHCP-Relay or are you using the ISA box to do all your routing?

Found that Windows Server 2008 support DHCP allocation on specific specific NIC, however I havn't got the horsepower nor will power to install ForeFront so I've opted for a Linux DHCP server on tjhe segment.

Spot the Windows Device:

It's messy, didn't put much work into it, but all the network gear is in one of the spare rooms connected to a hefty UPS, I use PoE to power the WRT54GL, the 8pt Switch which is sitting in the patch panel in the garage (Centre of house) so if the power goes out, the network does not, since our laptops can handle being off power for a bit.

The Phones (not shown) are just connected to the POTS through Ethernet, which is patched in the patch panel to a central splitter. The cordless phone base stations are also powered by the UPS by a crude method of PoE.

I have used the Ethernet in the house for power straight to the UPS, since we have got tonnes of Cat6 though the house. Have got a LED Light Strip in my room and lounge that is powered over, well, Ethernet from the UPS and controlled by the Smoothwall Box via a Arduino.

The whole network works well, is fast, and does the job.

Moved house, now have 2 ADSL2+ connections/modems plugged into a RB600 Mikrotik router that bonds the 2 ISP connections together.

ADSL modem1, Maxnet 100GB, 11000Kb Down
ADSL modem2, HD.net 100GB 10000Kb down

Now I can download at 2MB/s where previously I could only get 1MB!

Because Bonding ADSL lines with multiple ISP's is not 100%, my upload is still limited to 1000Kb/s (one link at a time).

Also, Chorus have just started installing the Fibre for a new cabinet 3 houses down the road, so come May/June I should be able to get 4MB/s!!!!!!! Hopefully by then VDSL will be a real alternative and probably cheaper than 2 adsl connections, with better upload speeds.

Here's Mine. I have a 2000kva UPS in the spare room powering all the network gear over a crude form of PoE. There is a patch panel in the garage where the WRT54GL + Switch sits. It works well, and best of all, it's IPv6 too.
