If you do that you can't get a replacement. I'd just throw in a new cable personally, even with the extra hassle.

Are you certain you have tested it correctly. One end of the cable into a switch, the other into your laptop?
As others have said, I'd be surpised if there is anything wrong with the cable.

UPDATE:   Took a very close, magnified look at the plug and found that a couple of the clear plastic separating lugs appeared to be at an angle.   Straightened them up and tested .... it worked !!!

Unlike other RJ45 plugs that have close-cropped wire separators, this one has them protruding just a minute amount, and OBVIOUSLY I did scrape or pinch the plug when feeding it through the floorboards, but of course I'll continue denying it was me Innocent

Ha ha ... yeah, crawling around with only 40 to 50cm height ain't fun. Worse yet there are some old dessicated bones undre there ... not sure if animal or last owners practised Satanic rites!

Regarding the offending plug, naturally I'll say it was my wife's fault when she shoved it down the hole from above.
