Just one further question on this. The third party firmware option is something new to me, but sounds like a great solution. Which of the various options would be best?

Ragnor initial mentioned Gargoyle. Is that because it specialises more in QoS, broadband sharing etc type features? Are there any other differences between Gargoyle, Tomato, DD-WRT etc to consider?

I'm running gargoyle on the TP-Link mentioned by Ragnor above in combo with an RTA1320v6 from trademe... both together were under $100 (TP-link new @ $89 and RTA1320 was $2 lol) and I couldn't be happier with the setup; with the QoS setup gaming and streaming works fine while torrenting (linux ISOs of course) and you can split the bandwidth between computers on your network. Very impressed with it. I haven't tried tomato but I think it offers similar features and ease of use.

As well as splitting bandwith between computers, can you have a 'guest zone' where a particular Wifi SSID is ringfenced and contolled? i.e. how are new computers that connect to the network treated before you can explicitly set their restrictions?

Off the top of my head I think you could assign all your known devices static ips in some range and setup one quota\set of QoS rules for them, then have another set of rules for the IP range you select as available via DHCP (this would sort of be your guest zone then) EDIT: And then have a 3rd range of static IPs for your known "guests" downstairs with a 3rd set of Quotas\QoS rules if you wanted that seperate too.

So, based on the suggestions in this discussion and the digging I have done, what I think I'll do is:

Get a new modem and router and flash it with gargoyle, to get the bandwidth management etc that I need. However, I'd like to have a dual band router for future 5 GHz use and I'd like a decent stock firmware with Guest Network functionality - just in case I need this as a fall back option.

Therefore, the gear I'm thinking of is a Draytek Vigor 120 and a Netgear WNDR3700, which I'll flash with Gargoyle.

Any comments or suggestions before I take the plunge would be much appreciated (as the suggestions to date have been).
