minimoke: When I go into the thomson dashboard and look at the connection on port one it shows as "active", there is a physical address, the IP Address Assignment is Static and the IP address is 122.57.2.74.

Now I check the Thomson page and the IP address has changed to 219.89.91.177. How do I lock the IP so it doesn't change?

unless you pay for a static IP from your ISP it will change. It shouldn't be a problem if you connection is reasonably stable.

If your gargoyle router is getting the public IP address, then your should be almost done. I had issues (I think) when MTU on the modem and router were different - I could access some websites but not others; not sure if that's similar to what you are getting. Setting them both to 1492 solved it for me.

Your ISP assigns you an ip address when your modem authenticates, the Thomson should be passing this on to the Netgear which should use it for it's WAN ip address as long as you have "Assign IP Address To Device" setup in the Thomson.

If the Thomson is screwing this up you may want to look at replacing it with a Draytek Vigor 120 which does PPPoA to PPPoE relay, then you can use PPPoE for the WAN in the Netgear instead of DHCP.

OR another much cheaper alternative is to get a Dynalink RTA 1320 off Trademe for cheap and use the half bridge/ip extension option in that.

Thanks folks. I'm convinced the problem is with the Thomson. For example I currently have the lap top seeing the Thomson on its network, The Netgear is plugged into the Thomson and I have a few wireless devices going but the only thing the thomson is picking up is the Wired connection between the laptop and the Thomson. Time for a change in modem!

Cheap! I've just picked one up off trade me for $1!. I'll keep an eye out for a draytek 120

Cheap! I've just picked one up off trade me for $1!. I'll keep an eye out for a draytek 120

Nice; the RTA1320 is what I run in half bridge with gargoyle device. :) I've also tried a TP-Link in half bridge but the 1320 is still the best\easiest IMO (if you don't want to shell out for a Vigor 120)

EDIT: The RTA1320s do have a reputation for running hot and quitting working after a couple of years. Mine doesn't seem to run very hot at all (in half bridge they shouldn't need to do much work I would have thought) but at the price you can get them I just picked 2 up so I have a backup.

OK. Another major step forward while I wait for the trade me modem to arrive. Blow me down but I'm accessing geekzone through the WNDR and through the Thomson. No wire or wireless between the laptop and the Thomson!!!!!!

So tonight's activities consisted of doing a factory reset of the Thomson. No major change there except a change in internet user log on. No connection to the WNDR. Pulled a few wires out, rebooted a few times still no luck. Then I tried a "ipconfig /release", pulled a few wires plugged the WNDR into port 4 on the thomson and port 2 on the WNDR into my laptop and somehow I now have internet. The light on the WNDR is still amber and not blue so not sure what this means. Time for more testing as I'm not sure wirelss is working. Onwards and upwards

Firstly thanks to ragnor and sidefx - great advice - much appreciated.

So I’m very pleased to be able to close this thread down. I've biffed the Thomson and got the RTA1320 but it hasn't turned up yet. So I got the Draytek Vigor 120 - overnight delivery from Ascent!

The whole Draytek/Gargoyle setup took me 15 minutes to get Gargoyle running. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. $90 or wasting a whole heap of time on the Thomson? Pretty obvious answer to me.

So now I get to play around with Gargoyle which looks like its going to do all I hoped it would. I already have websites visited / searches done running. Next up is allocation of bandwidth and setting up access times for the different devices around the home. Then on to remote acccess. Excellent stuff!

I’ve used an android app (no idea how accurate it is) to look at wireless strength and changed the 2.4gz channel to something apparently better. Interesting just how many other wireless networks pop up around the house!

No doubt my next posts will have much more of a Gargoyle focus as the WNDR3700 seems to work without any issue at all.

Perhaps one last question if I may. On the router it has an orange internet light showing – but I know I have internet access. Should this be blue like the 5gz channel light. Or is this just something that happens with Gargoyle?

That's bloody good to hear minimoke. The Vigor 120/WNDR3700/Gargoyle set up is exactly what I'm about to put together myself as well.
