Lizard1977: On a slightly related note, if wifi is so poor for UFB (though UFB seems to "max" out at 100mbps, and it sounds like 75mbps is achievable on an N300 wireless router, so it seems like wifi could use about three-quarters of the maximum bandwidth, which doesn't seem too bad), what sort of costs can be expected for wiring a houe for ethernet so that we can take full advantage of the higher speeds?

It's something I've thought about since we bought our house last year, but it seems like it would cost several thousand dollars. Does anyone have a ballpark figure for wiring a ~150sqm 1920s house, with about 7 rooms to be connected?

Regarding UFB speeds, I hope you don't get your hopes too high. In my experience on a 30/10 UFB plan I am continually seeing very much lower download speeds than the 30/10 would suggest. In fact, the Internet can't supply enough speed to push ADSL2+. Maybe the increased upload speed (9 Mbps for me) would be beneficial for uploading jobs.

There just seem to be too many choke points in most of the connections.

Currently I get no higher than 5mbps on our ADSL connection, and the reported line rate is only about 5.5mbps. So I guess if UFB can deliver two to three times that speed, with a degree of stability, at the same or less price, then I would be happy. Anything over that would be great.

The other drivers for UFB for me is that I'm looking to change ISPs anyway (Xnet's data charges don't work for me anymore), and UFB is coming to our street over the next few weeks (they've started digging) so I'm hoping to take advantage of a "free" install while Chorus are operating under their current agreement.

Ragnor: Connecting two routers:

ADSL2+ in NZ largely uses the PPPoA protocol, you can't easily bridge this (unlike PPPoE) so connecting two routers slightly problematic.

They way you have it connected now means you have double NAT, both routers doing DHCP, NAT. This shouldn't be a problem for basic home usage but can be a bane for gamers, voip, vpn and p2p.

If you care about resolving that you can connect them in wan bypass mode which has the Modem/Router do the work and the TP Link act as a dumb switch and wifi ap

What great timing! I happened to have exactly the same question as the OP, seeking confirmation of the best way to connect a modem/router to a new gigabit router (including the same new router, but a different NAS). Luckily I came across this thread before posting a question myself. The link given above gave a far better explanation for the network-dumb (such as myself) than anything else I'd found on the net. Followed them to the letter and things all seem to be running fine. So thanks, Ragnor, for the above post.

Thanks for the help so far guys. Here's an update:

I had some hiccups over the last few days, and it was a struggle just to get a stable connection. On Saturday/Sunday, I noticed my wifi devices kept getting bumped of the LAN at random intervals. After a bit of trial and error, I worked out that - for some reason - the TV was interferring with the network gear. Both the modem and router were located behind the plasma TV, to facilitate a wired connection to the home theatre, but I noticed that whenever I accessed a particular menu on the TV, it kicked all the wireless devices off the network. I moved all the gear into the kitchen and connected it to a different jackpoint, and hey presto - a solid connection. Wifi speeds also seem to have improved - I can now stream video files even in my computer room (physically further away than when the router was in the lounge) - and the line speed reported by the modem has risen to about 6000bps (from 5500bps).

I haven't had a chance to test out the WAN bypass idea. With all the issues I had over the weekend, I ended up having to reset to factory settings both the modem and the router, so both have DHCP enabled, but it doesn't seem to be causing a problem. I will try out the WAN bypass suggestion when SWMBO is out of the house, and I can safely try it out without pissing anyone off.

So it seems to be working well having the modem, router and NAS in the kitchen. I may have to review the location when UFB is installed. The ETP is located at the other end of the house, by our bedroom (which also has a jackpoint), so I may try locating the modem in the bedroom, and try running ethernet cable along the skirting board to place the Router in the hallway. Though whether that will work will depend on which ISP I end up going with, and which hardware I eventually end up using. For now, though, it seems to work.

The only outstanding thing is that I no longer have a wired connection in the lounge. To address this, I'm looking at Powerline. Does anyone have any experiences with these devices, and have any to recommend or tips to share?

Sorry just came back to this post. Generally we say around $90 per single outlet. That would include the wall plate, module, cable and labour. Obviously though would depend on the type of house and this is full customer price not 'geekzone cashy' price. My recommendation is your source all the parts like the wall plates and modules and I can help you out with cable (cable drums that are near empty ;) ) and have all the tools required to get it done.
