chevrolux: Yea as Cyril has mentioned latency is really not an issue. One instance where I bounced ethernet around a farm comes to mind. Got broadband from the main house to almost the back of the farm where the managers quarters are, required 3 sets of m5's to get round the hills. Ran VoIP for the phone too and had no issues. Links were around 1km each.
To get your connection moved you just need to contact your provider. If the house you are moving it to has a line already then you will have to pay for a second line install which last time i checked was around 150. Install the modem, set up the m5's then at your house put a switch and WAP and you will be away.
sbiddle: There isn't really such a thing as 'loop extender".
There have been a number of instances of providers installing private DLAM's and DMR backhaul. I just know whether the business case for this would stack up in your area without you fronting with the money for this.
I don't see there would be any plans by Chorus for an upgrade at your locations because are are currently in the wireless RBI coverage area.
Maybe i should have called it a DSL repeater?
sbiddle: They aren't used in NZ.
You're outside a Chorus RBI DSL area and inside a Chorus RBI wireless area. The simply reality is you're not going to get DSL or any other solution from Chorus.
The simple realkity is if you want a solution you're going to need to engineer it yourself. This could be by partering with somebody who can install a DSLAM or the simpest option if available if to deploy your own commmunity wireless solution. Both can be done pretty easily providing people are willing to front with money.
tudorale: Hi Neil,
Would you be able to please Private Message me with your Vodafone customer number and/or telephone number? I will have have a look into your connection and see if there's anything that can be done to improve it at all.

NOW we are talking the same language :)
Do you (or anyone else) have links to blogs/forums where this has been discussed, or have ideas of where and who I could go to to begin such a process? (Dslam or Wireless)
How much money are we looking to have to 'front'?
I'm thinking the cheapest/dirtiest method would be your m5 idea, though there'd have to be at least 3 relay stations (which could also have AP's installed there and offer to the people on the access road - but would require volunteers at the correct points to provide electrical power?)
sbiddle:
How serious would people be? And where would a point be where a connection could be fed from? What sorts of speeds would people expect?
sbiddle: You can completely forget about a Chorus DSL upgrade because it's never going to happen. Firstly even if the exchange is upgraded you're too far away, and secondly you're not going to get a cabinet closer because your solution is already in place - the Government funded wireless RBI network which is designed to cover people such as you who were outside the RBI DSL upgrade.
Your solutions are either to pool together and partner with somebody to build your own network which would have a lot of variables but could be in the $10k - $20k range or simply use the RBI network that is in place now. I don't know what Vodafone site you would connect to but there are plenty There are upgraded Dual Carrier RBI sites already delivering up to 25+ Mbps.
